I see bluegill, longear, greenie and maybe a few more varieties in this one. Caught it late last night at the Penthouse, on a 1/32nd oz tube jig. He was about 8 inches long, so a decent critter:

Anyone ?

I have caught truckloads of sunfish in my life, but never quite seen one like this. Those are the pure, vibrant colors of the fish! He's almost "glow in the dark". Surely one of you sunfish experts have seen this one before, i hope. It's got me buffaloed.

Honestly no clue.

But if Regis asked if I needed a life line would say no and just answer BG/Longear hybrid.

It is defiantly a hybrid of some type. I would also guess BG/Longear. noidea

Looks like a green perch to me, but it might have some hybridization. Beautiful fish!

+1 looks like a Longear/Bluegill hybrid. And I would vote the mix is with a Coppernose Bluegill because of the purple hue of the breast and stomach.

I don't know what that is, but Longears can really have some funky spawning colors. Heard tales of both males and females taking on some weird colors when trying to spawn in rivers, creeks and streams that are normally pretty clear but were high, swift and off-colored. Even the backwaters and sloughs had heavy current. Seen some unique color patterns in those times, but can't remember seeing one like that. And I think I would remember seeing one like that.

Pond or moving water?

Plus #1. Almost looks like it was skinned at the bottom?

I keep checking this fish out over and over. Whatever it is, it's beautiful!

It's called a "hypo" sunfish,

The same regular fish but with a co-dom gene called Hypomelanistic, it's a rare find. To help you understand what a Hypomelanistic gene is just think of any albino animal and that will help you understand. It other terms, a genetic f*** up. It you breed it, half the babies will carry the gene and come out hypos. smile

I breed snakes and do a lot of work with gene pull and selective breeding.

I may be wrong on this but I'm 99% positive that's what's going on with your fish.

- can I cook it?
