I fish a lake in west Texas and for the past month it has been going over the spillway periodically. I am interested in your past experiences that have been successful. We got hard rains 2 days ago and it is now going over the spillway almost 3 feet and still have rain in the forecast. There is one main creek that brings in all the water to the lake. It is really swollen right now and flooding pasture land on both sides. Would you even bother with main lake points during these conditions? I'm looking for channels and blues and have a bunch of grain soured and want to narrow my search by polling the forum.

I have been off...I haven't been able to catch hardly anything in long time. I am hoping normal water levels will return soon.

If the lake has a good population of blues I would be just out of the current in the fresh flooded grass with cut Shad. Been catching a lot of fish in a foot of water lately.

We look for the spots were fresh water is coming into the lake. I like the back of coves were the creeks or drainage water enter. These areas will usually flood into the fresh vegetation. This will bring in the shad, crawdads and other bait fish. We use a good punch bait. The cats seem to be feeding even more on scent. If you use small shad for bait, like hook the whole shad to our hook, tear the shad just a little to let the scent drift. Bigger shad we cut. The head and the gut area is the best to use.

On the lake where I fish, we have one cove that has a very shallow entry side (makes a point). We will tie up to the trees and cast on the mud flat. This spot will usually be in 1' to 4' of water. We use punch bait and shad there. The cats will be feeding on the mussels that group up on this point.

If were looking for big cats, we head to the main river or creek that makes up the lake. We look for areas were the water is making eddies or just dead water off the main flow. Usually around a curve or high bank. This spot is a good place for a big cat to set and wait for the bait to drift to them. If it has structure in it, the better. We use perch in these spots. Good luck.

I look for flooded weeds, lily pads, cattails, rushes back in the creeks and off of points away from the main lake. If there are fish there you will see movement of the vegetation, fish bumping in and out around the roots and some water boils. Drop a bait in there with a slip cork. If those are cats you won't have to wait long.
Quick way to get a box of eaters. Chum will help bring them in and hold them there. Most of my catching is in 3 fow or less this time of year.

From Genesis: "And God promised men that good and obedient wives would be found in all corners of the earth."

Then He made the earth round...and He laughed and laughed and laughed!

Sounds like Phantom. Wish I had some better suggestions for you, but you've got some good ones already.

Thanks Sam I have some night crawlers and some catalpa worms think i'll give them a try. We have been dealing with 25-30 ft of flood water for 5 months.

I won't lie most guys here outfish me on catfish I'm sure but I love it when spring floods happen on my local lake.

We find a leeward shore with flooded vegetation and throw whatever close (or even in) the vegetation and hang on!
