Put in at Scenic and it was packed. Talked to a couple of guides at the ramp and they commented that Saturday was kinda tough and they couldn't really locate them all bunched up. As usual, I struggled to find bait fish. I went into the backs of coves and threw my new for 25 minutes before giving up. Number one, I go on the water around 7. Maybe they already headed to deeper water. Number 2, I have got to get side imaging so I can see what is around me. So, I trolled some around Govenors cove and Neelys slough. Picked up around 12 fish total so it want a bust. Nothing huge but catching nonetheless.

You gotta go a little earlier and hit the docks with lights before daylight, for shad.

We didn't have a problem catching bait. Caught about 3 dozen shad in one cast. Went to the mouth of the same cove and caught 20 or so sandbass. Moved on to another spot and caught some more sandbass and several small stripers but only one keeper. Ended up dumping our shad because we needed more room for the fish and used topwaters and swimbaits all day. Took thirty fish home and threw the rest back. It was my first time on PK in a boat since I was about 15 which was 20 years ago so I was pretty happy with what we got.

You might try getting there early and catching bait on the high end of the lake. That's the best tip I can give anyone fishing PK. Bait on one end and fish on the other. Saturday morning was tough. Sat evening was great. Brady and I caught a two man limit in 45 min. I have been catching lots of crappie while catching shad. Crappie are getting more plentiful and I'll start fishing for them when the chocolate milk goes away on the high end of the lake. All my net caught game fish go back just in case there are any Jr game wardens out there😀

Randy: I've been getting a few PK crappie on Jiggin Jerry Taylor's jigs. Crappie feel free to come out and play now that there are fewer Striped Bass. The BRA had a flood gate open all weekend so I figure PK stocked the Brazos again. Still a lot of stripers down lake.
I've been able to go into the fingers of Neely Slough and Bluff creek and catch shad shallow along the edge. I never throw the net until my boat in right in them then I drop it over them. The water is so clear at PK and the new politically correct weights make these nets sink too slow for me to catch threadfin shad unless they are shallow and visible. I have lots of gizzards go whizzing by me but I cannot catch them at all. Next time I go fishing with you I may need some pointers on catching shad.

I did not fish Sunday but Monday it was on. We started at South D&D where we picked up 9 keepers then went to bluff creek and it was nothing but under size fish. Made it around to gains bend and it was as good as it gets with a wide open bite on good solid keepers. You gotta find some stained water for bait, either mud stained or even better if you can find some algae stained water, not gonna be any of that till it gets hot again.

I don't know the name of the little slough that I caught my bait in but it is on the right when you're heading south out of South d&d. 25'of water and clear. My screen was completely covered with bait and I caught enough in one cast to fill the livewells. I could have sat there and caught a million shad. My net is very heavy and it catches bait good in deep, clear water

Butch: I think they are rare because stripers, LM Bass and big cats eat them all. Maybe not the 10 inch or larger keepers but I fish with perch sometimes and a 4 inch perch is dead meat in PK. Caught this on a big perch (perch, crappie...just bait for stripers)
