Can a battery cable that has a break in the ground wire cause motor performance problems while running? I mean does it effect the firing of the plugs. Is it the only ground source for the boat. Sorry I have a 88 Yamaha pro v 150.

Yes. There is no frame to ground to. If either battery cable gets loose, your electrical system is kaput.
I am assuming a fiberglass boat.

Not sure of the Yamahas...... running E-TECs do not require a battery even be connected to run. A loose or disconnect of a battery cable only affects battery charging.

Can this possibly make the motor cut out or have a loss of power.

No, the motor generates it's own ignition spark. How do you think the pull start motors run? A bad ground would probably damage the alternator/charting system.
Also, even if it's an aluminum boat, the hull should never be used as a ground.
