Ok, I'll start with the basics. I target Crappie and catfish. I fish 3-4 different lakes relatively close to home so navionics or lake maps are not needed. I do want GPS with waypoint capabilities, SV and DV with CHIRP sonar. Only one unit (console mounted)and looking for a screen size of at least 7", and lastly I have a budget of about $500... I am not overly impressed with any of the HB units (Onix units look cool but I'm not putting a $2500 unit on a $4500 boat) (no offense HB guys)I know people are devout believers in brands and I'm sure each can give me a slew of reasons to join their cult. What I am asking for is, for the money, what is the easiest unit to operate? which gives the best quality view/clarity? What are the downsides to your units. I'm currently leaning towards the Garmin Striker 7 SV but also looking at the Hook series. Can my requirements be met for that price? Used equipment could be an option as well. Looking for the best bang for my buck that meets my needs... Someone convince me which way to go.

Since lake maps are not an issue, the Striker 7 will be perfect for you. It will allow you to save waypoints but just wont have any lake contours, just strictly waypoints. The striker 7 sv will have sonar, downvu and sidevu as well for right at $500 with a 7 inch screen.

To get sidescan with Lowrance, you are looking at the Elite 7ti for around $700. They have a Hook 7 for $500 but it does not have sidescan only gps, downscan and sonar.
