Is it possible to wade pretty far up or down the Brazos from the HW 16 Bridge? I've never been before and I don't know what to expect but I want to hit that area pretty soon and try to catch some nice smallies. Thanks

its not if they aren't letting out a lot of water but I have a feeling with the rains it is probably running pretty swift. just check the flow data

Flow data says 260 cfm currently, what is too fast for wading?

I waded in 330+ on the South Platte and Arkansas rivers up in Colorado. It was doable, but not enjoyable or safe by any means. Wading staff and good spiked wading boots are the only reasons I even attempted it.

I would like it under 200

We fished this past Saturday, it was 300 CFS and about 9" higher than normal. If you are in the bigger pools and not narrow water; 300 is okay, but we typically will avoid anything over 300. In fact we prefer to hang at 200, just saying.

Wading up or down from the bridge would be a bit challenging in 300 cfs, mostly because I wouldn't recommend crossing the river. There are spots where you could, maybe, but lots of places where you should not. You could certainly start on either side of the river and work up or down on that side. At the bridge you can access it from the east or west side. A wading staff would be very helpful. As others mentioned, 200 cfs or less would be better. You can also wade up near the dam and work those pools.

300 on the brazos below pk is really nothing in my opinion. Very easily waded at 300! One thing I've noticed is you really can't compare cfs from one river to another. There really is no comparison. There are so many variables that play into effect. Each stream has its own optimal flow. For example 300 cfs on the brazos is a nice steady casual flow but you put 300 cfs in a smaller stream or creek then it's potentially a raging flood. It all depends on how big the stream bed is and how much water it's capable of handling. 300 on the Mississippi would be a catastrophic drought and nothing more than a trickle. 300 on the red is hardly anything at all, because they are larger rivers.

Just because one river has a flow of 300 and is difficult to fish does not mean another river with 300 is even remotely similar. You can't compare them. You have to learn each river you fish and what it's optimal flow is.

But to answer the original posters question. Under 300 is nothing on the brazos. I personally would wade it at more than 300 but many may not feel comfortable with that.
