I got it fixed but had already had it towed before the last posts with recommendations on where to go. It was fixed at McGill Propeller and Welding in Lewisville and I got a spare hub as well. About $440 for the repair and spare hub. The guy (Bill I think) from Bill's wrecker service was really good and knowledgeable about how to toe it and getting on the truck was a lot of work since it had to go on backwards and one wheel hung over the side. I see why most towing companies wouldn't touch it.

The bad wheel actually fell off as the boat was winched on to the truck, so yeah, I shouldn't have gone those last few miles. I'm sure I did a lot more damage in doing that. Lesson learned the hard way.

I'm going to jack it up and make sure I know how to put on my spare hub tomorrow.

Thanks guys!

-Wm

Thanks for the follow-up post. Many times we wonder what the outcome was. I hope your spare hub becomes your insurance policy that you just haul around for years and not really need. It is a nice bit of peace-of-mind to have one.

To learn about installing a hub, I suggest you check for youtube videos. I mention this because a dry run would mean taking the bearing protector or grease cap off and removing a nut and cotter pin. You really don't want to disturb the hub installation the pros just did for you. Instead, watch youtube so you get an idea what to expect if you really do ever need to swap one on the road - not really hard.

I know many of you guys probably know this but I learned years ago to put anti seize compound on the bearing surface of the spindles , It can help to prevent a cooked bearing race from sticking to the spindle .

My reply was predicated on leaving it on the side of the road vs getting it home or somewhere safe.
I would never leave my rig on the side of the road. But, if you have a dual wheel trailer, yes by all means remove the bad wheel and just get home.
Single axle, my election is to just get it off of the roadside.

A good friend of mine nagged me about going completely through my boat and trailer before I ventured too far from home. While it was a pain, and I wanted to be on the lake, it was well worth the wait because I knew that things were right when I was finished. I pulled all the hubs and repacked them as well as rebuilt the brake system. Went through the boat as well. I don't know if you just had that problem fixed or if they did all the bearings. If they didn't, I would. Go completely through your boat and trailer and make sure everything is right. It will save you pain later.
