When doing the double haul cast are you feeding line out through the motion or is it just to build line speed to shoot? If that makes any sense

You can do it either way.

During a haul, the line hand moves down and then back up. While moving down the line hand will pull line down through the guides. When the line hand goes back up to the rod, the line that was pulled out of the guides needs to be fed back into to guides. The up motion may need to be slower than the down motion to allow the line to feed into the rod. If the line hand moves up faster than the line shoots back through the rod, you can introduce slack which can cause your cast may fall apart.

Note: the line hand moves in a continuous down up motion with NO pause between the direction change. Some instructors use the term "downup" as one word to emphasize the continuous motion.

During the up motion, you can release and shoot additional line into the cast, but you don't have to do that. (But, I usually do. smile )

The double haul is all about timing. Start slow with short distance casts to learn the timing and technique before trying to add distance.

Good Luck!

My buddy and I might be testing out some of new shooting heads in S. Arlington today or tomorrow after work. You are welcome to join us. I can show you a double haul.

Rex laid it out great. The only thing I would add is this. The line hand is a mirror image of the rod hand when adding power. The rod had starts slow and accelerates to a stop. So does the line hand at the same time. Short line short haul long line long haul. While the rod hand is pausing the line hand returns to the up position. I teach "downup" one word. If you don't return your hand quickly there will not be enough pull in the line to remove the slack you are introducing.

I would tell you to do this side arm sliding the loops on the ground until you get the timing down and then do it sidearm in the air about waist high and then raise it to vertical. It takes some time but it works.

Keep us posted on how its going. Take some of these guys up on offers to help.

Bill

Thanks Mike, but I am not an IFFF master. However, Bill G. has earned that title.
