Hey guys!

So it looks like there is a SINGLE FLY tourny coming up here near town-- This place has perch, bass, catfish, carp-- no trout or anything-- I have never fly fished before and heard that I can fly fish without a fly rod-- What action/length rod am I looking to use ( i have all spinning reels)-- and what kind of fly should I take that is pretty good for non-fly rods? The tourny allows only ONE fly and it's a multi species tourny--

Tourny: https://www.facebook.com/events/785296808237715/

Rules:
3. You can fish with only ONE fly during the duration of the tournament.
4. If the single fly is lost and cannot be retrieved, you must leave the water and return to the fly shop for fish species photo review you may return to the creek to fish after your photo entry if you wish.
5. This will be a multi-species tournament the winner of the tournament is the individual that catches the most species of fish on a single fly. Keep this in mind when selecting your fly.

Any info would be great! I usually fish for catfish and sometimes TX rig for bass/crank baits-- Would love to delve into fly fishing!

Thanks!!!

-Chris

I would say a 8-9ft 4wt or 5 wt rod should work. Action would be dependent on your casting skill, but since your new maybe a med or med-fast action fly rod. An olive woolly bugger would be a good one fly.

Damn BoPro...that was my choice of fly for the tourney! Way to give away the secrets.

Broincarnate, talk with Chris or Emily at the shop and double check to see if they are allowing spinning/baitcasting rigs with flies. I'm honestly not sure what the rules are on that part. If they aren't allowing them, I have a TFO BVK 9' 5wt rod and accompanying reel that I would lend you. Hopefully it doesn't rain right before hand and blow out Brushy. Even 1/2" seems to blow it out for a day or so unfortunately.

The other options for flies are a Brushy Creek Streamer, small popper, ants, spiders, etc. I haven't fished Brushy yet this year since moving a bit north but did quite frequently last year.
