I'm basically a novice salt water fisherman as I spend most of my time crappie fishing. I'm got to Matagorda this Tuesday and staying all week. My question is do you think the Colorado river will be any good? With all the rain we have had not sure which I should try to fish mostly the river or the jettes.

If you are land bound, I'd fish the jetties and the beach. The river has been pumping some a big slug of fresh down it with these rains. Most of that is being diverted into West Matty with the locks but some of it will be going down the old river.
If you have a small canoe or kayak, the south shoreline of East Matty would be good as well.
What sort of gear do you have?
Any bass gear would be fine for catching trout, reds, flounder and sheepsheads. Also, you can use a lot of bass tackle like spinner baits, small walk the dog baits and plastic worms. Through the worms (bass assassins, flukes, even culprits etc. on a 1/8th oz jig head for trout and reds. For flounder fish with a quarter and bounce it across the bottom. Use a small grub on that jig head for flounder.
Also can use cut bait or live shrimp as well.
Good luck. t

Trout support how's the fishing down there I late August. I'll be sticking to the surf.
Politicians, baseball players, high-powered corporate CEO's they all seem to eventually let us down. Nature, however, does not. Look to her for inspiration and you will learn the secrets to living a good life. The most Important lesson it would seem is to make sure you spend as much time fishing as anything else.

It can be good, in August a lot of guys will switch from trout in the surf to starting to catch bull reds. The matagorda jetties will yield a couple of those. The Sargent cut on the beach is also another good option for that. It's also good for trout in the summer as well. Lot's of people wade the sergeant cut / beach front in the summer and do well.

Well I tell you what the fishing was tough at Matagorda. I fished hard from the piers on the river, pier on the surf, and 2 separate jetties. Only fish I was able to land was 4 hard headed catfish. I used shrimp and fillets of fresh mullet for bait but the fish just weren't there. Everyone I spoke to didn't catch anything except a few hard heads. In total I only saw 3 fish that people had caught over the course of 5 days. I really wish my luck would improve when I go to the coast fishing. Maybe when the rains slow down and the coast cleans up the fishing will improve.
