Taking a last minute trip road to through New Mexico at the end of the week. Any recommendations on where to fish this time of year?

Northern NM so willing to stop just about anywhere. Might even venture into Colorado for a day or two.

Runoff is going to be high, so tailwaters might be your best bet. Call the high dessert angler fly shop in Santa Fe they may be able to help.

Runoff is tricky right now. Cold weather has it on hold for a few days. Tailwaters (Chama, San Juan, upper Cimarron) would be my target.
Agree with last post - google Doc Thompson.

If it's Northern N.M., I would suggest the Cimarron and Red River. Stockings have started of rainbows. Stop by and Talk to Tim at Eagles Nest Fly shop in Eagles Nest. He will know what they are biting on and put you own the fish. He also does guided trips. If you are in the Red River area stop by Starr Angler fly shop and talk to Kai. He to does guided trips and will put you on the fish. Good Luck!

The conejos and Los pinos in southern Colorado were excellent last week

Not trying to steal the thread.... Kody's papa - no runoff yet in the Conejos basin? I am looking for a place to go later this month. Conejos is usually getting high and dirty right now....

Conejos looks pretty good in the pics they posted today with a couple of nice browns. Plus no crowds in southern Colorado and the San Juan is not far.

Talked to the wife last night, cold and wet there this weekend. She said the conejos was a little stained but fishable

Spent the weekend in Taos, and runoff is in full force. Lower Red and Rio Grande are blown out. Did well for browns on the upper Red. It's actually in good form right now. Definitely clearer the further up you go, but stained and high enough that you don't have to be stealthy. I didn't get to fish the Cimarron but it looked fantastic on Sunday and not too crowded yet. Tributaries of the Red like Goose, Columbine, and Cabresto should be fun right now if you're the type that's ok with brushy ninja fishing for likely smaller trout with a good chance at a decent cutthroat. I didn't get to scope the Hondo. Rio Fernando de Taos looked pretty good upstream of town. And if you can get to the high lakes I'd think they'd be fishing very well right now. Good luck if you make it up there.
Don't take anything for granite, cuz that's what tombstones are made of.

I love the lower hondo! Caught some real great for such a small creek. The further up you get from the road where it runs into the rio at the old high bridge the fish get bigger in a hurry. Got to fish the best caddis hatch I've ever seen late one evening there.
