I'll be down at the Devils River in a few weeks and was wondering if anyone has done any fishing on it recently and can make recommendations on what the large mouth and small mouth are hitting.

I was there in April. Caught lots of nice smallmouth with my biggest on a 5" fluke with a nail weight in the nose. At one point I found a live crawfish and it was fire engine red. So I tied on a jig that had some red in the skirt with a craw trailer and did really well with that. The three things I threw the most were ... Jig/craw trailer, green pumpkin Yum Christie Craw, Yum fluke.

My biggest bit of advice is to cast upstream. Those fish will face upstream into the current and eat what comes down to them. I caught several fish just by setting my rod in the holder and letting the line out as I drifted downstream in the current.

Awesome, thanks for the advice. Any luck with watermelon color baits or was it mostly red? Some years they tear up the watermelon, but I think last year they were hitting pumpkin more

PBJ jig and craw. Cast into the rapids after you go through them. Smallies hang TIGHT to cover adjacent to fast moving water. White and chatreusse spinnerbaits/buzzbaits. Topwater frogs. Wacky rigged senkos. Anything texas rigged. I was there in march and caught my two PB black bass. One 7lbs. The very next cast I hooked into a 9. One of the best places in the world. PACK LIGHT!

Keep your colors mostly natural. I fished a purple craw. That was the only unnatural color I fished.

We were there 2 weeks ago. I did really well on june bug senkos and watermelon red senkos. Also did good on watermelon red craws. My buddy did really well texas rigging tube baits. My biggest bit of advice is don't underestimate some of the rapids. They are running a little bigger than normal. The risk of injury isn't super high IMO, but if you don't have things strapped down you WILL lose something.

I learned that lesson the hard way a few years ago. I lost some gear in the rapids because I didn't strap it down right. Thanks for the info on baits you used

So did I! I broke the tip off one rod, and had my tackle boxes get slammed into a rock and lost every hook, weight, spinner, and chatter bait i own! lol

Somewhere in the bottom of Dolan is an iPhone 6. Probably doesn't work so good right now though.

Somewhere in the bottom of Indian Creek rapids is one of my fishing poles. We almost lost one of the kayak seats in those rapids too (improperly strapped down) but we were able to recover it after some diving.

LOL my Yetti Rambler was at the bottom of indian creek rapids. I got lucky and found it after about 10 minutes of diving. It was behind a big rock. Those Indian creek rapids were fun.

I definitely recommend securing anything that's valuable. I lost two rods recently (including a spinning rod I had just built!!) on the Upper Mountain Fork. If it isn't tied down, it will wind up on the bottom of the river. It happens really fast and once your gear hits the water it's impossible to retrieve it. My rods both had floats on them and they just disappeared.
