Although I have had some previous success fishing for carp in muddy water, recently it has been quite different. There are these two ponds next to each other that I have been fishing a lot for carp recently. Only until three weeks ago has the carp fishing really picked up and every weekend I go there it's been better and better. The only problem is, the water isn't very clear. I've been basically blind fishing, casting at mud plumes for hopes of a strike. Time after time though, no carp. I have tried Zug Bugs, Rainy's Carp Teaser, San Juan Worms, a variety of black nymphs, and black wooly buggers. What do you fellow fly carpers suggest doing?

I actually prefer murky water as long as it's just clear enough you can see the mud bloom. They are out a lot less skittish that way you just have to keep a real tight feel on the fly or they will eat and spit it out before you can even blink. Might ask Capt Mac about presentations in that murky water he really seems to be on them!

If it's not clear, then you're basically trying to land in front of a vacuum cleaner, and hope they pick it up, and hope you know when they do. Pretty difficult. Don't hesitate to use a fly with some sparkle in those situations.

I've just started to get into tying, but have been doing it with household materials.

Okay. There's a fly that is very simple, uses actual fly tying materials though. I have no idea what it's called / where it came from, but I go to it in situations like you describe. I hate using it because it really lowers my opinion of a carp's IQ. I will shoot a video of the tie - probably takes about 90 seconds to make.
