What is the best channel catfish bait. I want one that will stay on the hook. Some I use are too dry and crumble off the hook.

I've been using some stuff made in Granbury and having good luck with it. I'm using #6 treble hooks and it stays on pretty good. I use the cheese bait, but he has blood also. His website only lists it by the gallon, but I bought a small jar of it to try it out the first time. http://www.mrwhiskerscatfishbait.com

All punch baits on any given day will catch fish.

If your on fish, the fish really don't discriminate, lol

Where i think prepared baits stand out is how well they are waterproofed and how well they are fibered. Cheese is cheese....but the ability to stay on the hook and be casted out is what makes the difference.

My personal best is still swimming out there just getting bigger. One of these days I will quit feeding it.

If you're fishing where the fish are then most any punch/dip bait will work. As for staying on the hook, when it gets dry add a little vegetable oil to it. Just enough to make it sticky. When it's too wet (it will be in the summer) add some flour to it to make it sticky again.

I haven't tried stubby's although I need to get up there and get some. I've had good results using the Team Catfish Sudden Impact.

When in doubt, set the hook.

The thing I like about Stubby's is that it's heavy enough to use without weights. Makes dealing with tackle that much easier, and the shy cats don't feel anything else on the line. That, and it doesn't stink.

But like was said, they all work if you find the fish.

Salsa hit it right on the money. Got to stay on the hook first to catch cats.

If you are at Lake Fork, try Catfish Candy available a Fisherman's One Stop on Hwy 515. It is a punch bait and will stay on the hook. I will put it up against any bait but only sell it at this location. It is very hard to make, and I really don't make anything off of selling it. Just like to see folks catch fish with it. I caught 1,500 catfish in 2011 with it, which is the last time I kept accurate records. Normally, it will catch an average of 15 per hour.

All prepared baits work if the fish are there. It just how bad you want your hands and boat to smell. That's is why I prefer stubbys.

Do any of you remember the rotten egg in the wire harness with the treble hook rig? My Dad used it when I was a kid but I have not seen it since.

Do you let it sit on the bottom, or do you crank a turn or two off the bottom?

Believe it or not I have actually seen a few caught on DK's and CJ's. Not many but a few.
When they are feeding they will bite about anything you throw at them.

From Genesis: "And God promised men that good and obedient wives would be found in all corners of the earth."

Then He made the earth round...and He laughed and laughed and laughed!

We have a 5 gallon bucket of j pig and a bunch of Danny King. Caught 4 limits today on a slip cork and had a coffee can full of one in the front and the other in the back. There is no difference if you're on the fish, when it's hot and bait gets soupy we mix in some random bait we have in the boat to thicken it and the cork keeps going down. But out of all of them my favorite is cj's monster but it's more expensive and gpa always has a bucket of J pig around and he don't mind sharing.

When our punch bait starts to melt, we add a egg, some cows blood, and some sour maize. Then we use a 2/0 circle hook with a natural sponge. Basically we turn it into a dip bait. Works great.

Hey post a picture of your goodies there sometime when you have some made up! i could try something different on my case,
have a stock pond that cats wont bite! cut perch, shrimp, worms. About a acre impoundment with some weeds as cover, some afternoon shade. Pond has a natural spring, someone suggested we try some some sticking cheese bait, but havent made any of late......

thanks, hogflyer

I prefer Stubby bait over punch bait in almost every condition. Now I admit that most baits work well when the catfish are very active. If a catfish is near you will get him with Stubbys.

Sent you a pm. Would like to try your bait. Do you know if anyone has ever had any luck on Amistad or Choke Canyon?

Cats are where you find them. I've gotten them in 30' and 2' on the same morning. Just keep chumin and moving until you find some that want to cooperate.
Get well soon Stub. Those cats are partying and having a good time since you've been laid up. When you get back they are going to pay. I'm back in Minnesota for the summer and they are laughing about that too.
Get some Stubbys bait and wipe the stupid grins off their faces.

Ask Obiewan57. 50,000 plus fish in the boat is a pretty good indicator. CJ's is his bait of choice.
