Would like some opinions on the Mercury Black Max 200 XRi from the 94-95 era. Found one that has had annual maintenance done every year,...and the thing looks like you could eat off it. Don't know much about them, but am I correct in assuming that the nomenclature "i" in XRi means it's fuel injected? Also, the current owner claims compression is good on all cylinders. I can only take his word for that until I can go see for myself. I have no reason to doubt until given one,...so all that being said, how bout some constructive inputs on that motor in general. This could be a sweet, sweet deal and although I'm honestly leaning towards a Yamaha 200 or 225, a good motor, that's been well maintained is absolutely in the mix for me. Thanks in advance,...no brand bashing please,..just solid intel that I can use for making my decision.

Not a more reliable motor ever built. Ever.

what Pat/Steve say!...

XRI was just tha badge used for EFI tha first few years (after "220 Laser" was dropped) till it was dropped for EFI badge... had someone say, and kinda makes sense, that XRI was used first cause of tha XR used for tha XR2 and XR4....sounds like it anyway.

A friend of mine had a 150 XRi for quite a while with no problems, upgraded to a larger boat and motor. I still have the earlier 2L carbed version of the 150 (1979 model) originally on a 16' Skeeter Wrangler and transferred to a new 18.5' Nitro in the late 80's.....has only needed carbs rebuilt a couple times, regular water pump impeller changes every 2 years, thermostats and poppet valve once just for good measure, 1 power pack, 1 fuel pump rebuild, plugs every couple years and new fuel lines once.

On a typical weekend trip, fishing morning and evening, cruising and some skiing afternoons 22 gallons would usually last unless on Texoma where I moved around a lot....and when I am moving its usually 60 mph+. I would think the fuel and oil injected motor would be even better on fuel......

I had a 1994 Merc. 200 EFI and it was a great motor. I had it for 9 years and put something like 500 hours on the motor. One had 1 power pack go out and did routine maintenance. That was it!
