Hello all!

I just bought one of the shallow water anchor pin mounts that someone on this site sells as I already had an 8' pin. Trying to get the screws into the aluminium is not working well for me. I have a pretty powerful drill and drilled pilot hole in ever expanding size until it is just smaller than screw. I can't get the screw to turn/bite into the aluminium and I am starting to strip the head.

Any ideas for me? Is there a specific type screw that will have threading that will cut into the transom?

Thanks in advance.

You need a better fastener. Screws should thread into aluminum easy, too easy.

why don't you drill all the way thru and put bolts in with a sealer?

I second cast's opinion, find a different fastener. It sounds as if the threads on the tip aren't aggressive enough to take the initial bite into the aluminum.
If you're not living on the edge, you're taking up too much space!

Stainless steel self tap screws will do the job. Don't forget to put some sort of sealant on the screw and bracket before installing.
If the fish don't bite your not baiting right...

I would never trust screws to hold anything in aluminum that was going to be subjected to stress. Drill through the transom and through-bolt it using large fender washers or aluminum plate for backing.

Thru bolt stainless hardware and 3M 4200 seals it all up. Anything less is going to fail.
