Fishing a local tourn. yesterday. First light, first spot I see a fish break surface. Immediately reach down for top water rod and bury a treble hook deep in middle finger. Cut hooks to free bait and spend the next 20 minutes doing the "line around the hook shank and pull" procedure to get it out. I was 2 pulls away from heading to the ER when it finally popped free. Bandaged finger up and went fishing. Ended up having a pretty good day and got a check.

Props to the Bill Dance Outdoors show for demonstrating the emergency hook removal procedure.

Anybody else know of other effective ways to get treble hooks out of your body parts.

The line pull is the only way other than pushing it all the way through and cutting barb off.

yank em out with needle nose pliers, worst I had was 2 points from a #4 treble, pulling on one would really give a zing on the other side. Glad I haven't got stuck with anything bigger yet.

It's funny how grown men are such babies about something like this I saw a guy faint while we were preparing to yank a hook with this line method.

My goal will to be more carefull, when slinging baits, of the guys in the back of my boat. My kids are always saying geez dad that went right past my head. I get in my own little world and forget there's even anyone else in the boat.

Do you do this too?

Hooks only have one way in but they have two ways out, you just have to pick your poison depending on severity. I've seen a few nasty cases of buried hooks over the years, some of which the line pull was the best option, others not so much. I try to keep the deck as clean as possible and take a few extra seconds when handling rigs if that's what it takes to prevent an unfortunate incident from ruining my day. Now if I could only convince the fish with a mouth full of trebles to see things my way I'd have it made.
