Bassfan has the story. From his statement I've seen that done several times here for the FLW Cup on the river the exact same way. Just being around someone talking bout spots and areas to someone else

Not a fan. However, the ruling seems a little out of whack.

If the conversation was truly nothing then he wouldn't have thought about it when asked the question, which led to the lie. I don't know the man and he probably is a good guy but he messed up. I can promise you he isn't the only one but hopefully this sets an example for others that their fishing should be what separates them, not how much info they can get. It probably wasn't a "give me all your info" conversation but it was enough to make him rethink about it when asked, therefore, something was questionable in the conversation and he knew it at the time. If it was totally honest he would have never thought twice about it and would have passed. My $.02

To me not talking to your buddies is one of the most ridiculous things about tournament fishing. I know me personally in all the years I have been fishing and someone told me where and what to throw hasn't worked out hardly ever. Yes it may help you develop something of your own but not just show up and whack them on tournament day. I have a good buddy that I would put my life on him not cheating and he had to take a polygraph and was not able to determine whether he was lying so my other buddy was brought in and passed no problem.

someone volunteering information when not asked is not grounds for a DQ, while he received it, he did not ask for it. So what this means is that every morning non tournament anglers can go to the launch while they are waiting for takeoff and say hey I caught them on this over in this creek. Before you can get the no information out of your mouth, whether or not the info was used or not, the info was received and that is should not be grounds for a DQ.

Asking for it is one thing, but someone volunteering it is another.

For some reasons I am not surprised Clausen was randomly selected by BASS.

From what he said he had a conversation with his friend about where other competitors were fishing. That means instead of saying "we need to talk about something else" he participated in it. He openly admitted that so no arguing there. Now his friend didn't put him on fish but knowing other guys patterns or areas could help you out in what areas or patterns you try. Info is info, it doesn't have to be "go here, fish with this". These guys are pros. They need to find their own deal and can talk about it to friends after the event.

I've had pros stop me mid-sentence and say "I can't receive ANY outside information". More than once. Doesn't matter that Clausen didn't ask for the information. He received information from an outside source during the no-info period. Whether that information helped him or not is irrelevant. The DQ will stand, imo.

This is a good reason why polygraphs CAN screw a truly innocent person. Here's why:

Polygraphs all depend on how the subject reacts to a question. If the rule states that "no information may be received" then a person that over analyzes everything, because he's trying to abide by every rule as best as he possibly can, will be wondering if every little blip that he overheard someone talking about in the isle of some tackle shop would be "information" that the rules say you can't receive. And many of you will say "That's ridiculous, that obviously isn't information that you received that would help you," but that's all in how you personally interpret how the rules are read. A person that doesn't think twice about this would pass a polygraph with flying colors, but a person trying to be as honest as he possibly can that over analyzes, could make a blip on the polygraph.

I have no opinion on whether Clausen should be DQ'd or not.
