My brother and I are planning for a fishing trip in a couple of weeks. He hasn't been bass fishing in a long time and I haven't been but once since my major surgery. We are both wanting to get on some good fish and I know a lot of the metroplex area lakes are muddy as heck.
I have never been to Lake Tyler and wondered if it is as muddy as others out there and how it is fishing? Is it a crowded lake on the weekends?
Oh and he is in Mesquite so I'll be picking him up headed that way, which is why we were thinking Tyler, maybe Tawakoni, trying not to go too far east for a day trip. Long drive for me.

stay away from lake tyler on the weekends in the summer months because the skiers and fun boats will really get annoying. with the temps rising to upper 80's and lower 90's here recently, im sure they are already there on the weekend now. it was still dirty especially on west lake bout a month ago and im sure it hasn't, or wont, clear up with all the rain weve got and are going to get. good luck wherever you decide to go.

Just my opinion, but I think Lake Tyler would be a terrible choice for a fun fishing trip. I fished a 58 team tournament out there last weekend, with almost all the top local sticks entered, and it only took 11 pounds to get a check. The main lake was fairly clear at that time but we are in the process of getting a gullywasher rain right now.

There were almost no fish on beds, at least not in any of the areas we were in nor where any of the other people I have talked to fished. I don't know what happened to the spawners you would expect with a full moon in April, but they were nowhere to be found. We caught five keepers for 9 pounds and were probably lucky to have what we had.

Yes, the lake is crowded on weekends. Tyler probably has more tournaments per surface acre of water than any lake in Texas, plus the pleasure boaters and jet skiers are coming out now that it is warmer.

Honestly, I would go somewhere else if I had a choice.

Fished the same tourney as Razorback and had 4 fish for around 8lbs! There are not a lot of good fish on Tyler! You catch a lot of small fish! Water is not bad, clearer from midlake to the dams! I think I would go somewhere else too and I only live 20 miles from the lake! Palestine would be my choice!

It took 20 lbs to win that tournament last week on Tyler and 21.5 lbs to win the week before.

For future reference the majority of the bass are post spawn on Tyler after Mid April. Same way year after year. You're not going to find a bunch on beds on Tyler in Mid April unless its has been a very cold spring. The shad are spawning, the water is high and stained = Fish Shallow:)

Old lake (west lake) water clarity is good from mid lake to the dam...I also live 20 minutes from the lake and only fish it if I'm going to a tournament. I generally catch a ton of fish, but for the past few years the size has not been there. It's a pretty lake and the Marina makes an ok hamburger, but I would probably go to Athens or Fairfield.

Go to Palestine and fish the north end, those fish live year around in dirty water

tie on a black Santone buzz bait with a gold blade, a frog and a tube or creature bait and go to work

Lots of spawners a month ago, that's one reason you aren't seeing many now. Such a small lake they are close to being done

Went to fish a tournament on Tyler this morning. Tournament was cancelled due to high water. The Marina was flooded, Boat docks under water ect.

Well I'll look at Athens or Plastine then. Those are still in range for a decent day trip
