Green sunfish are one of my favorite species to target. Pound for pound they fight as hard or harder than a hybrid bass. I actually had an 8" Green sunfish almost jerk the rod out of my hand before. I have also found that the smaller the pond (up to a certain point), the bigger the greenies will grow.

Over the last few weeks I have been hitting the ponds. The bluegill, red ear and long ear bite has been slow. The Greenies have been biting pretty well though so I decided to try some different flies to identify what works best. I finally narrowed it down to a black and chartreuse Briminator variant.

I tied up a couple new flies and went to the ponds right before dark. I started below the dam, as usual. I always try to approach with stealth and begin casting about 15 feet or more from the bank. The pond I was fishing is very small and shallow but holds some quality fish. I made a few casts in the shallows then worked my way up bank and made a couple casts into the middle of the pond. The second cast into the middle of the pond I hooked up with a fish. I have caught several bass over 3 lbs. in this pond and from the force it was pulling I thought that is what I had. As soon as I got the fish up where I could see it I knew it was special. It was the biggest green I had ever caught. I immediately took it to the Marina to get weighed.

I hold the current record of 0.8 lbs and 10.25 inches.

This fish was 1.0 lbs and 10.75 inches.
