Never been much of a crappie fisherman so not really sure how to judge them. Gave the bass a break last weekend and went drop some jigs around brushpiles mid lake Toledo Bend and caught about thirty crappie. My son caught one that was a good bit bigger than the rest and it weighed 2.4 on my digital scale. Is this considered a good one? Stupid question I know but would this be like catching a 6, 8 or 10 pound bass by comparison? Probably a stupid question but that fish was nice man.

that is a very good crappie in my opinion, most look for the 3 pounder as a major accomplishment.

+1 lb: decent size
+2 lb: solo picture worthy and you can brag a little
+3 lb: equivalent to a ShareLunker

That is, at least to me. Nice catch!!!

2-2 1/2lbs = 8-10lbs 2 1/2-3lbs= 10-13lbs 3-4lbs = 13-20lbs if ya catch anything bigger than 4lbs take me fishing with ya. Anything bigger than 14" is a good crappie in my book. Those are my guesstimations not accurate figures.

June Bug, that is a very good fish on any lake. And yes, I would compare it to a 10 lb. bass. Not many catch one that big, and a 3 lbr would be like a 15 lb bass, scarce as hen's teeth on public waters... IMO

For a quick reference, look at the lake record for both species on any given body water. Should give you a good idea how well it groups...

Solid fish... Congrats thumb

Hooking a fish is like playing string with a cat. The exact size, shape, color of string matters less than how you wiggle it- and little cats are easier to fool than big ones. John Gierach

Thanks for the replies. I tell you what that crappie fishing is addictive stuff. It has me seriously torn on what to do next trip to the lake. Me and my boys definitely dig it.

You are not alone, it is just as challenging, and a lot cheaper...

multiply your Crappie weight x 3.33 to get a Bass size estimate.
a ten pound bass divided by 3.33 would be a 3 pound crappie.
3.33 x 4 pound Crappie would be a Lunker (13.32) fish

I think most crappie fishermen were at one time bass fishermen. I still love to bass fish on occasion but if it gets slow then the bass rods go back in the box, the crappie rods come out and I go huntin. If you get hooked on dock shooting then you'll probably forget the bass all together. roflmao By the way that is a very nice crappie your son caught.

I do agree with you Jim SR., Myself and the guys I fish around have always said a 4 pound crappie and 14 pound bass would be about the same. A 2.4 for a kid is tops.

Great fish...but more importantly, father and son on the water together. That alone makes it a trophy fish in my book.
