I like a slip cork style myself, easier to make a cast. Doesn't need to be very large. Main thing is that it needs to be balanced with your split shot, so that it will go under with the slightest pull. They usually have a mark/color change to show how deep they should sit in the water. Try different split shot sizes until you get it just right. You can do this at home in a sink filled with water, or bucket, if you want to. Hope this helps.

I use a 1 1/2" styrofoam cigar slip cork when fishing my bream jigs. Works really good for me.

I usually fish off the bottom most of the time. When I do use a slip bobber I use the Thill Crappie Bobber 1/4 ounce. They cost about $3.00 but you can find them on sale for around $2. thumb

Side Note: I have also caught a bunch using a regular small Eagle Claw bobber. hooked

A lower cost alternative to the Thill bobber (which is absolutely the best available) is made by Eagle Claw and available from WalMart. The 7/8 inch slip float model number EC788F sells for $1.29, or a package of 50 for $55.00. I bought a package of 50 some years ago when they were $35.00 and still have about half of them.

The Eagle Claw balsa floats are much superior to the foam floats and almost as good as the Thill balsa float.

The Eagle Claw 7/8 inch float matches a #3 Water Gremlin split shot.

Equally important is the selection of the bobber stopper. The best one I have found by far is the Gizmo BS 4-12 made by Rainbow Plastics. Find it here.

I use a bobber about 95% of the time and I have spent a lot of money and time trying to find the best combination.
