 Anyone seen this before?

 Caught this bass today and it had a badly broken tail. I've never seen this before, any thoughts as to what could've caused it? Weighed in at just under 3 lbs. and seemed otherwise healthy. Put up a strong fight and swam off just fine when released.

Actually yes. I used to volunteer at a hatchery and every year a few of the off spring would have deformed tails or broken tails like the one you caught. I was told by one of the biologist that it could be from inbreeding. Sounded crazy to me at the time but actually made sense. This particular lake was only stocked once back in the 40's and after the 80's they started keeping the big girls and spawning them out at the hatchery. They've done this for years so there's really no new genes going back into the lake. Just my guess.

Caught this mirror in a pond and he had a severely disfigured tail, some people said it could have been growth stunting from over population or like a not large enough habitat but I have no idea why, could've even been an injury from a predator when it was smaller.

I was told the same things that fish pick deformities up during the developing and hatch stage. Extremely poor water conditions,poor food sources,and contaminated water sources can also play a factor.
