So I haven't fished since I was a kid and got back into it. Would I have any ill effects using 6lb test on a reel that's for 10lb and up? I searched but can't find my answer. Sorry about the newbish question but have to start somewhere.

The reel is a Abu Garcia xs40 I mainly want to fish for crappie and blue gill since that is what's in the small lake close to me.

Go for it...any issues would be minor...sure going to use a lot of line though...

That reel is rated for 10 to 14 lb. line and would probably take well over 300 yards to spool it all full with 6 lb.
If it was me, I'd get the cheapest 14-17 lb line I could find and spool that on until it was a bout 3/8" short of being full on the spool.

Then, I would tie a blood knot and finish topping it off with some decent quality 6 lb. Personally, I like the Vicious 6 lb Hi Viz panfish line - it has very low memory and behaves the best of any mono I've ever used. When you break off enough that you're losing casting distance or the line is getting frayed and ratty, peel off the rest of the 6 lb and fill it back up with fresh line. A 1/4 lb spool of Vicious 6 lb has 2360 yds. for $6.99 from the factory web site so that would let you put on fresh line about as often as you wanted.
Vicious 6 lb Hi Viz Yellow.

The The Abu Garcia web page lists the following capacities in yds. for different line weights for your SX40.
210/10 180/12 150/14

Have fun with it thumb
Crappie and Bluegill are my top two favorite fish to go after. Nothing to me is as much fun as catching a bunch of big ole bull bluegill when they are stacked up on beds. Tasty too!!

And Welcome to the forum!!!

I also have the opportunity to exchange it for a shimano sienna 2500 if that would be better.

I use a shimano Chronarh and have it filled with 30# Fins braided line and use an Alberto Knot to attach a 6' leader of 6# hi Vis Crappie King , from Academy . I can change leaders from 6# to as much as 30# depending on what species I'm fishing for from Bluegill to Red Fish and Specs.

P.S. The Fins WINDTAMER is expensive but great line it's only a 8# diameter line that once you get it broke in ( a couple trips) you'll love it

Rod & reel should be about the same with the numbers, and about the middle is what line will work best. If you want to get by with one rod best all three match.

Even with a 6'6 medium action pole? It's a ugly stick gx2 I'm still learning everything the pole was a gift and I'd like to not have to buy a new pole.

I prefer a light action for bream, but it will work. I have 5 of those reels.

I think you're going to like that little 500 size reel for crappie and bluegill.
A tip for you is to get in the habit of closing the bail by hand after a cast instead of turning the handle and reeling to make it close. What that does on the smaller size reels is greatly reduce the number of those little loose loops of line that form and stay on the spool. Until they eventually come flying off with a bunch of line snarls and wind up lodged in between the 1st and 3rd eyes on your pole in a big tangled mess of line. When you see those loops start to form on your spool, best to make an easy cast and then pull extra line out by hand until you have them clear of the reel and then reel up with tension on the line to get things sorted out and smooth again.
