Says captains are not allowed to fish during regional or state.
Does this include official practice days or just the actual tourney days?

yes you can pre-fish. You can't fish on tournament day.

Last 3 years captained over 30 tournaments. Haven't made a cast except to set a reel or get out a backlash.
It's not too bad. Sit in the drivers seat and make sure the fish are doing fine. Depending on rules sometimes I get to net one. Biggest thing I have learned is to pack more food. I much prefer the ones that allow you to work on tackle, net fish and cull. I don't mind not fishing but not being able to do anything sucks.

I plan on becoming a captain when I graduate college in a year and a half. Sounds fun and I would love to help high school kids with anything they need. I fish collegiately and if I help at least 1 kid become a college fisherman, I will have accomplished something

I've done it several times as a fill-in captain. I have been able to fish a little, but mostly oversee the kiddos. Lots of fun.

I read the rules and it is interesting that they will not let them watch the Elites next month. How about when the are live on the web? I am signed up as a marshal and will be there.

Watching them on the web is a little different then riding around and marking gps coordinates.

It is a lot of fun, to be honest it is fun just sitting back watching them fish , if they can run the trolling ,othe and stuff.

We do allow the captains to do everything else during the regionals , cull, tie baits on, net fish, etc... Just not fish. With the amounts of scholarship money being awarded , hopefully everyone will understand.

The shame of it for me personally is that you have to have captained an open to captain a regional or state event. I am an accountant and have been working for four months straight. Get out of tax season and can't help the kids that I have been telling I would be there for them. Really bummed about it.

I'm sorry about that. Just cuts down on kids trying to get boat captains that know just the Regional or Championship lakes.
When we are giving away $100,000 in scholarship money between the 2 regional events and the State event. We are just trying to cut down the chances of Boat captains picked just because they know the Championship and Regional lakes. That's all. Just trying to level the field as best as we can.

Thank you for your interest in helping the kids though, maybe your schedule will work out for next season. We will start up in the fall.

No problem Ken, I was on Livingston last weekend, did not weigh a fish, but my solo team of a young lady had a blast. She and her dad and I had a good time. Told them anytime they needed a captain to holler.

Appreciate your work.

No worries, I completely understand. I'll definitely see if anyone needs help in the fall. The boys that wanted my help are both graduating this year.

You aren't actually "giving away" those scholarships - you are AWARDING them, aren't you? "Giving away" generally refers to the recipient not doing anything in particular to receive the item! Squeeze all the good press out of it you can by promoting the award of scholarships!
