Hi All,

I'm in the market for a casting rod to frog fish with, but I probably have a slightly different application than most do when asking for suggestions for such type of tackle. I kayak fish here on the rivers in Central/West Central Texas, so handling a 7'+ pole in a 10' kayak on a Hill Country river probably isn't the best idea. On top of that, most of the fish I catch are under 5lbs, so I don't exactly need a 2x4 to fish with ;-). I'd prefer something around 6' and for sure no more the 6'6", but still have a solid backbone for getting fish out of grass, water willow, and lily pads with a flexible enough tip to make it nice to cast and get good action on the bait. I'd love to keep it under $100 if possible, but am willing to go up to $150.

I went out this past Saturday and the fish were right up on the bank in deep cover. My little 5'6" light action rod made it quite the challenge

you'll have 5 or 6 more in a bit who say the same thing, but I suggest a Dobyns Savvy 735. Fantastic rod.

Look at the Falcon Bucoo BCC-5-166. This rod will be absolutely perfect for your frogging needs. These rods are under $100 but fish like a $200 rod. I really like how light these rods are, they're one of the lightest on the market. This rod will be perfect for carrying along with your kayak, it's only 6'6",lightweight, and very affordable.

Agree with bb94. I ordered the Falcon 6'10" Heavy "Cajun Baby" from the same website Monday morning. It was delivered just after noon today--I believe they have a warehouse in Oklahoma. Very happy with outdoorproshop.com (tackle warehouse didn't have any of the Cajun Baby rods in stock.)

I would honestly go with a TFO I own 10 rods of theirs and have never had an issue I just bought a 7ft heavy action for my froggin setup and love it! They have the best return policy and are made in Coppell so if you break it you take it up to them and for 15$ get a brand new one. Definitely my favorite

Since you will be fishing out of a kayak, just remember that you want a rod long enough for it to swing freely around the bow, else a fish running with your line might scrape the line across it.

I am generally, though, all in favor of a shorter rod for this application. It brings your lifting point back closer to your hands and that gives you a bit more leverage/power over the fish.

Lews SuperDuty on a Duckett Terex. Awesome combo and throws 50lb braided line very smoothly.

I'd say the Dobyns fury 704 or 663, the 704 is 7', but it's solid. The 663 may be a touch on the light side, but it's still very stout.
