 How Much and How Big a Bait Can They Eat??

Been several posts in the past few years about how big a bait a crappie will eat. And how many shad/minnows they will eat. Found this from someone who is an acknowledged crappie "expert." Seems when they are hungry, they may eat quite a bit at once. But there are times when they're not on the feed that those finesse baits will do the trick. Here's one man's opinion with a little proof to go along with it.

I just saw that too! That's pretty crazy. I didn't know they would eat their own kind. Makes me think of some new jig colors I need to try LOL.

I've caught crappie on 3 in sassy shads, 4 in smack baits and 6 inch deep red fins .
I was not targeting crappie on any of these. I have caught crappie on purpose on 1/4 oz buck tails that look more like walleye or small mouth bass baits.

This is something I have been trying to tell people for years. The big crappie eat just about what they want to, and they are in most of our lakes.

I've got friends of mine that have been catching slabs while bass fishing using 4" creature baits, 1.5oz tungsten with punch skirts.. The bait itself is the size of your fist.

Best bait I've used at PK for crappie has been live shad about the size of those you pulled out of that one. It's what they eat. Caught this nice crappie at Texoma on a huge crankbait I was using for Stripers.

I used to use a whole chicken on a hook, but sometimes it BACKFIRES , and the alligators catch on.. lol

I have caught several (on different occasions) crappie on jug lines fishing for big blues with 4-5" gutted shad as bait. Always shocked me to see them brave enough to try and swallow it. Of course I threw them back

Haven't caught too many crappie but was bass fishing a pond and had a 12 inch crappie hit my 3 inch swimbait so hard I thought it was a 2 pound bass.

I've targeted crappie with 3-5" threadfin shad, it only takes about an 11" crappie to eat a 5" threadfin

they seem to love my ultra vibe speed craw lately caught 3 nice ones on it last week one was a 14"
