We just booked a little cabin on the river, below the Hwy 70 bridge. Never been up there. Is the fishing in the river any good? We aren't fly fisherman. Rod and reel. Should we be prepared for fast moving current? Downsize everything I assume? Any tips/suggestions would be appreciated.

Anything in the area we should make it a point to check out? I will be there with a buddy and his two boys. I will have my boys as well. Between us, we have a couple pre-teen boys and a couple teenage boys.

For trout fishing- you many options: 1. fish the Upper Mountain Fork, fish the creeks around the Upper Mountain Fork. If you fish the river, there are three zones that clearly identified. Zone 2 is a barbless , no live bait bait zone with a daily limit of 2 over 24. Zones 1 and 3 are OK for live bait and barbs. Limit is 7 no size restrictions. You can fish from the banks or on the river, use a canoe. By the fly shop, you can put in a canoe or rent one. The fishing is up river to the first bend in the middle of the river. Large rainbows can be caught there. 7 is your limit. In the creeks, the trout are also big but, they stock 10 inchers twice a month or more.

Broken Bow lake- shore fishing is good in the morning at dawn and dusk- black bass, smallmouth, whites and crappie. If you have a boat- the lake is open and very large. Find structure and you find fish. Walleye can be found on the rocks at 20-30 FOW. Top water bite is good on early AM and late PM. Any where you find structure should produce. You can launch at Stephans Gap.

They are letting water loose at the dam. River will be running pretty goo and 3 inches of rain forecasted. River may not be very fishable.

I haven't been there since the floods. I hear it's changed quite a bit. I have always fished the river in zones 1 and 3 with small inline spinners. I prefer the rooster tail but the fly shop there in the state park sells some small spinners that work well also. Just remember to work them down current or cross current. Trout are smart and they know that their food doesn't float upstream. Make sure you have a net. Not having one has cost me a number of fish. Also keep in mind that once a fish is on the stringer/in the creel it CANNOT be culled. You can put it back after you catch it but not after it's been on the stringer or in the creel.
