So, after much research and information from the TTF (By the way, huge thank you for the tips!), I'm almost completely decided on a good first kayak. The kayak is a Heritage Angler 12' Sit-On-Top Fishing Kayak. Here is a link for those that are curious. http://www.academy.com/shop/pdp/heritage-angler-12-sit-on-top-fishing-kayak Is this a good or bad choice?

If you're talking about my actual spine, I have scoliosis. I don't really feel any pain at all, but I've kayak fished a few times before with my friend while I was alone.

At 65# That's not real heavy so I'm sure he is referring to the uncomfortable looking seat.

That looks like an old Red Fish 12 except they made the hatch smaller. I'just check to make sure that you can upgrade the seat and expect to do so very soon.

I think the only deal breaker to me would be if the seat wasn't up-gradable.

Yeah, the kayak will paddle fine but that back strap as a seat is going to be a pain in the back and the butt.

I own one and have a bad back. I haven't had any issues being out on the water for several hours. I just cinch up the back support so it applies pressure to my back. Its a good stable kayak and I like it, but I wouldn't try to stand in it.

Now, the part that gets me is I have no backside, so I sit on a standard flotation throw cushion I got from Academy

this works wonders

It seems like every kayak now is being built with a real seat and I wouldn't purchase one without it. Especially if you ever want to re-sell it. The used market will be full of kayaks with comfortable seats and you'll be looking to unload one like this that promotes swamp butt.

Agree with Matty. Try watching Craigslist closely and snatch up a deal on a kayak with a seat for cheaper than the Academy yak.
