Anyone know why my alarm is coming on my 2000 225 .Isn't low on oil and not overheating as it's on my driveway! Running down the lake yesterday the RPM's suddenly dropped off and I couldn't get over 3000 RPM's before they would back down. I've got a hotfoot and if I pumped it I could get up on plane for a short distance before I pumped it again. Made it back to the ramp but I had to pump the throttle all the way back. Would idle fine!! Suspect fuel pump diaphragm failure(have three) but why is alarm going off now 24 hours later???? Any ideas out there !!!! THANKS !!!!

Unplug the motor mounted reservoir sensor wires to check if the float sensor has gone bad. Some times you have to disconnect the cranking battery, re-connect after 5 minuets to reset the protection mode. Does your fuel filter have wires coming out of the bottom of it. If it does unplug the wires to check that water sensor. While your checking , replace the small inline oil filter on the main oil tank. You have to remove the oil tank to see it.

I was about to post almost the same question. I don't know anything about motors but mine is a 2006 Yamaha and it says 225 HDPI Vmax on the cover. I took it to Lake Lewisville this weekend and it beeped loud for about 1 second on two different occasions. Both times were when I let my foot off the hotfoot to come to a stop. The oil tank is full.

You really should think about reading the manual for your outboard. It's generally considered a good idea to at least know a little bit about what the alarm beep codes mean so that you are sufficiently informed to know when you should turn the key off or risk further damage with lots of 0's on the repair bill. I'm not familiar with the codes for your outboard, but the manual will have a table or chart most likely. Certainly it will contain enough info to get you started.

The manual was not very helpful because it just says "if the so-and-so alarm sounds then do this" but it doesn't describe the alarms to know which alarm is sounding.

Sorry about that. It sounds like the Yamaha manual came up a little short compared to what I've seen in some of the other manuals. Mine has info with guidance on what might be the basic problem with various beep codes and how severe the issues causing that beep are.

Nothing to be sorry about and you're exactly right I need to know the basics at minimum. This is my first boat and I'm learning as I go. I'm putting it back in the water today to troubleshoot (and fish). I think I'll stay close to the ramp in case I have to troll back to the ramp.

I saw a similar thread in another forum where the beep turned out to be from a guy's new fishfinder unit. Interestingly, I just installed a HB Helix 12 on the console the day before I heard the beeps. I swear the beep was coming from behind me but hard to tell when the wind is blowing and the engine is on.

Ahhh, now I get it. You've got multiple things that can beep, and may not know for sure what's beeping either. In my experience (not including big Yammies), big outboard electrical systems have a remote beeper module that is often mounted at the console. Many boat companies just tie it up in the wiring harness under the dash. So, even though your outboard may beep at you, expect that the sound will come from somewhere around the driver console, not the engine itself.

For my brand motor, a problem can trigger the motor to limit the RPM intentionally in an attempt to prevent me from blowing the motor. Yours may have been doing that when you noticed it would not run over a certain RPM. It's trying to say "I'm not sure what's going on, so be careful with me." Maybe some Yamaha guys can give you more info. Be sure to post your exact model for better help.

oil low or not, that sounds like the issue. Troubleshoot the oil reservoir under the cowl. Mine did the same thing and I wound up rewiring the whole circuit.
