Couple of weeks ago I bought a carton of nightcrawlers from Academy. When I got to the lake I discovered they were long, droopy, skinny things, with little of anything to them but skin. For the past two weeks I have used super worms and large meal worms. Have any of you guys had this problem with nightcrawlers? Maybe they were just cartons that had been in their cooler for a long time, I don't know.

Sometimes you get a bad batch. I always open the container and take a good look at them. If they are what I like I buy them. If not I usually go somewhere else. I have a great place that sells worms in New Braunfels off of FM 725. It is a Shell station. Their worms are always thick and very lively. They also last a very long time if you keep them in the refrigerator.

LOL hate this roll reversal thing here but I cringe every time I open the fridge and see Ashley's bait boxed up next to my supper.

Guess I need to search for another place to buy bait. Never heard of African nightcrawlers, they sound good if I could find a bait shop with them. Am close to a Walmart and theirs are worse than Academy. In the meantime, I will continue using meal or super worms. Thanks for the replies, much appreciated.

At one time I raised ordinary earthworms, but I no longer have a place to raise them now that we live In a townhome.

I have had great success with the nightcrawlers from walmart as long as: step 1: feel the weight of the container, those that feel much lighter than the others do not even bother to open. Step2: The containers that do feel heavier, you want to open and inspect for sickly/dead worms and while open check to see if the worm dirt appears to have a muddy consistency, it is my opinion that those that do have had water added and I will pass on them every time. step3: after discarding step 1& 2 choices, find the heavy containers that have healthy looking worms, the dirt is moist yet not mud and you are good to go. I bought a worm farm thru walmart online that fits in the bottom of the fridge, every now and then I will pick up a box or two of worms and add them to the farm, and let them get to farmin I lay down a line of worm food at one end of the box, position some damp newspaper over the opening and then put the lid on....I keep worm for months, and months and months

yep, townhome life will definitely kill the worm farming business here's a thought...when ur taking ur evening walk, look around the landscaping for mulched beds...find u a flat rock, or like the guy above, lay down some newspaper...when it gets wet, the worms will come up under it...ck it ever now and then and harvest the worms

I use all artificial baits on the sunfish. Jigs, small spinner baits, flies, and Gulp Alive products. All catch fish and are very easy to store and handle.

Academy should have a date on the bottom of the carton, if not look inside or tell someone , because that is false advertising.

Open the carton and check before buying. I always do. I have even brought it to their attention that the worms were all going bad one day and they threw out all the worms.

There is a bait shop on HWY 29 just outside of Burnet that is very good called Red Top.

I'm often amazed at how much good, helpful information I get on the Forum. This thread has been like a whole lesson on finding and selecting worms. I want to say thanks to every one of you that replied.
