Anyone hear anything about the big bluegills that used to be caught along the crappie wall? Several years ago I went out and had fun catching them but haven't heard anything about them recently, or even been to that lake recently. I was wondering if they are always holding to that wall or is it a seasonal thing? Have some time to get my boat in running order, and want to take it out this weekend to let it hit open throttle for a bit. Figured catching some of those bluegill sounded real nice lol. Let me know your thoughts please. Thanks.

Cally is loaded with big Bluegill. I do not target them but know anglers who do. You can find them on certain parts of the lake during certain times of year. The wall, coves, and by reed beds. I also heard some areas by the dam are good.

That's good news. Ive caught many, what I thought were nice sized bluegill, at cally while throwing cast net. A while back the wall was being talked about everywhere, so I went and tried it, and it produced some BIG bluegill. Was a lot of fun. Been a few years but ever since then I have been wanting to go try it again. I haven't fished for them in coves or the reed beds, but seems like it could be well worth it due to the amount of people that used to target that wall for reds and what not. Not sure if that has changed over last several years. My family bought property off of IH37 and southton road, so all of my fishing has been at braunig because we are less than a mile from it, but I remember cally was hard to beat.

Well, me and my brother ended up taking the boat out, for a "make sure everything is running good" cruise out on Calaveras yesterday. Tried our hand at finding some bluegill, with little success. We trolled around the rocks near the damn, throwing earthworms under a bobber against the rocks, and caught nothing. Then, we trolled and casted along banklines, and sunken logs, and overhanging trees in several of the coves. Didn't get a bite, other than a catfish or 2. Got hot, so we found a cool spot, and started throwing worms again. Caught a decent amount of catfish, rat reds, and 1 palm sized bluegill. Put a 1/2 oz sinker on bottom, and a hook about a foot up from sinker. All fish were released, but we are still puzzled as far as finding the bluegill out there. Anyone have any pointers, or know what we should be looking for? We were thinking that the bigger fish hold in the deeper water, but we are not experienced in locating schools of bluegill, so we really don't have a clue. Any advice on finding them would be awesome. Tight lines.

basically no bites in water less than 5', and the one bluegill and all the other fish we caught were over 15' deep.

They might be fixing to spawn. Fish coves 3 to 6 feet of water. Look for gravel or hard mud bottoms. During late may all the way through November the wall is pretty good. Also had good luck in the 181 cove fishing at the end. Use night crawlers.

Ok, cool. That will be my battle plan for my next outing. I have been super busy at work and have not had time to get on here, but I appreciate you post and information. We actually took a trip out there yesterday evening with just about the same success. I didn't see this post till now, so didn't get to try your method, but basically slip bobber rig was what I was using. Nightcrawlers for bait. Caught a mess of catfish, 1 rat red, and 1 stout bluegill. The size of the bluegill is the exact size range we are trying to target. All fish were released to fight another day. It just seems they aren't thick, atleast the places we tried. We tried the wall, and didn't get a bite. I remember we used to count a certain amount of pillars and fish certain ones but only did it once or twice so cant remember which ones they were. We sat there for bout 30 mins fishing 2 pillars and not even a bite. Then we found a deep cool spot where we caught all the fish at. Didn't take pics of the cats and reds but made sure to get one of the gill so that I could show, that we are gaining momentum on finding them. Now I just need to find a few spots that they like to hold thick. Thank you banker for your response and advice. Pics are on my phone and I'm on my comp so I will post them shortly. Also are there any other places in san Antonio area where they get as big as the ones there in Calaveras? Those gills seem to be the biggest ive ever seen. Tight lines.

It has been awhile since I have fished Cally. Let us know JGuer04 how you do.
