I'm new to the kayak life and currently own a car without a roof rack. What are some options that exist for transportation? Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

What kind of car? What kind of kayak? Cheap option is foam blocks with bow, center, and stern straps. Malone makes an inflatable cartop rack. Google "kayak cartop carrier".

I bought this for my Ford focus https://www.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/B00EF3SAJQ/ref=ya_aw_od_pi?ie=UTF8&psc=1 to my surprise it actually has held up very well. I did replace the straps as they are rather flimy and replaced the plastic that goes over the four feet.

Yakima, Thule and Malone all make racks that go on most cars just set a budget and get the best one you can afford. Remember whatever you choose your fishing trip is riding on it...

I got an inflatable so I could easily use my car. Also not a "drag" to bring to the water

I have gone the cheap route. As long as you don't have a sunroof anyways. Buy some jumbo pool noodles and out a piece of 3/4" PVC through them. Then run some bungy cord through the PVC that you can use to keep the pool noodles from rolling off the roof. The bungy cord can be run through like the straps. If its a big kayak you might want to save for a rack. But this has gotten me by until I can buy a truck.

Whatever you do please tie the front and back of the kayak as well as the middle down. I have seen someone brake hard and their kayak slipped out of the middle straps and shot forward over their car.

There are lots of tricks for front tie downs, where you don't have to have the rope rub on your paint .. google front kayak tie down ..

Good Luck and be safe.

My apologies for the delayed response. Haven't been online due to work. I drive a Nissan Altima and Lexus GS300. Thank you all for the info.

Daddy: Like Fisherman13, I used giant pool noodles with a 3/4 PVC inside. Instead of attaching them to the car, I bungee them to the top of the kayak by running the bungee under the bottom from one end of the noodle to the other. Front and back the same. I then lift the front of the yak onto the vehicle roof, from the side, and swing the aft end up and onto the roof. I tie the yak down with ratchet straps. To provide for extra security, I run a strap from one side of the vehicle, over the top of the yak and into a scupper hole, then back under to the next scupper hole, up and out over the top to the other side of the vehicle, That way, the yak is "captured" by the ratchet strap. Never had a problem in thousands of miles on the road.

Good luck! Island Jim
