I am pulling my boat from Texas to Kentucky this weekend. I have difficulty seeing around and behind me with the cover on in traffic, but would I get better gas mileage with it on? I definitely will put it on a night for better security/protection. Thanks.

I doubt you would get better gas mileage with it on. It acts more like a parachute than streamlining. It will also block what little view you have of whats coming from behind.

I rarely trailer with my custom trailering Ranger cover but mostly because I'm lazy and don't want to put it on @ home, take it off @ lake, put in on before leaving lake..... That being said I will use it when it's raining and I have some highway miles to log. Nothing gets your boat more filthy then dragging it down the freeway in the rain. I defiantly would trailer to Kentucky with the cover on especially if I was planning to cover it anyway when I stop(as you said you were). Gas mileage with the cover on or off? I think you are overthinking this:-). But I also drive a diesel 3500 Dodge so I can't imagine Id notice it one way or the other.

Heck with gas mileage, I don't like having to clean june bug guts off my seats and console. Going all the way to Kentucky I would definitely use the cover. Have a safe trip. thumb

Iam heading to lake Guntersville Monday I will trailer with out unless it is going to rain!if you don't have a custom cover it's not a good idea to trailer with it.

Put it on and leave it on until you get to where you are going. If you run into rain you are good to go. Other wise I suggest you stop and put it on in the rain as mentioned above.

If it's a nice boat, put Saran Wrap around it (where the cover contacts boat) before you put the cover on. The cover will scratch your boat. That's a long haul.

Get you a hundred feet of paracord and wrap it in spots it tends to baloon and you will be good. I get about 2 mpg better with the cover. Not to mention it'll stay cleaner.

Unless I am fishing local, I always travel covered. Example-two years ago I left Missouri headed for Fork. Blue Bird sky. Got about 30 miles from Fork and lots of road construction. Flagman stopped me and let water truck out ahead of me to wet the road. I had to follow dammed water truck on wet road for 10 miles.

A roll of pallet stretch wrap is a bit heavier duty than the kitchen wrap. Home Depot (and I think Walmart) sell a roll that's about 18 inches wide with handles, around $20. It's easy to make a couple of rounds on the boat where the cover contacts the hull.

The better covers have a web strap in the hem; it's pulled tight by a ratchet. You can often update a cover that doesn't have this. Getting that hem tight will help reduce friction movement and ballooning.

While I agree rain will get a boat nasty, if you are doing a long-haul journey on major roads, there's a lot of diesel soot and other oil/grease that ends up on/in the boat. Ever wipe your finger on your truck after a long Interstate trip even when there has been no rain? While I may not bother for the short trips once I arrive at a destination, I do cover mine for the long-haul to get there.

When I head up to KY Lake I always cover mine, I had a custom cover made , Nolan's. Fits like a glove. I really haven't noticed much different in gas mileage.

I dont like taking any chances on the boat getting filthy before I get to the lake
On the reverse side I wipe it down when it comes out of the water and I head home, not much need to clean her up that way. Lazy yeah, maybe, but lots of logging in my neck of the woods and always some sort of road destruction going on , plus somebody above mentioned the bug guts. I dont care what it looks like going down the hwy, only when I am in it on the water.

2 MPG fuel mileage gain, I dont much believe that but ok maybe so, you are dragging a parachute

Recommend use the cover during transport.

yup...cover it...for security reasons it makes food and bathroom breaks less stressful...it keeps dirt and road pebbles out of the boat, especially should someone flick a ciggy butt out the window it won't end up in your boat...
