I have a friend looking at used boats with 250EFI's. Have any of yall ever hand calculated what kinda mileage you were getting out of this motor?

My 250Pro xs seems to get better mileage than the new Dodge 2500 Ram I just bought with the 6.4 Hemi !!!
Thanks, Billy

Well it depends how he drives. If he's 70 mph where where expect 1-2 mpg. If he just cruises 3-3500 rpms maybe 5 mpg
Honestly who worries about fuel economy in a bass boat lol

Is it a 250 "EFI" or 250 Pro XS? There is a difference. I have owned a Merc 250 XB which is an EFI motor. These were made prior to the Pro XS motors and they were not nearly as fuel efficient.

This is a correct statement. I have a Mercury 225 EFI and my boat has two 33 gallon fuel tanks for a reason. She's thirsty, but she will flat out scoot and is a dang strong motor.

That would be me. I fish several times a week but I do not have an unlimited budget. I currently get about 4mpg average and spend $100-125 a month on gas.

The old EFI's are real thirsty, especially if you run hard. However, they're bullet proof. You can nurse them along and they get better, but they still use a bunch of of gas. If you're worried about fuel cost either look elsewhere at a ProXS, or trailer closer to where you want to fish. Honestly, you've got to look at the price difference up front as well. If you can get into an EFI for $5000 less than a Pro XS, that buys a lot of $1.80 gas. It won't stay there forever, but till it does...

I had a 200 Merc EFI that would get around 3.75 mpg cruising at maximum efficiency and around 3.0 wide open. The 250 would be in the same ballpark, but probably a little lower mpg at wide open.

I've never calculated it, but WFO, probably less than 2 mpg. Cruising at 4K, maybe 4mpg.
These motors run the cleanest at about 4500-5000 RPM's. They are thirsty for gas and oil. (If it's an XB like mine, require 91+ octane).
Solid motors. But, get a leak-down test done to check the motors health. Also, send the induction system off to be cleaned and injectors calibrated. European Marine or Brucato have the equipment to properly do this.

I would say compared to a 250 ProXS it would get about 1 mpg less at any given rpm range. Doesn't sound like a lot but it is 20%. Instaead of 10 gallons each trip you may use 12... So unless you are gonna be making long runs everytime you go tot he lake, you may not notice much difference. They are very solid motors and they sound so much better than the ProXS motors!

Optimax has improved fuel mileage compared to the EFI.

I had one and like stated above, she was very thirsty. It's a great motor but not fuel efficient. My boat now will probably get 2-3 times better on fuel consumption.
