Hey guys,
My buddy invited me down to Rockport to do some kayak fishing next weekend. I fish for bass pretty regularly in freshwater but have never been saltwater fishing. So to say the least I don't have a clue what to throw or how to throw it. Just looking for some advice of what kind of lures to purchase before I head down there. I think we will be fishing for reds and trout. Any help would be appreciated

A lot of your bass tackle will be just fine.

Any Bass Assasin in olive, pumpkin seed, water mellon, black or some pearl, or in clear water something like opening night.

Small walk the dog tops like spook jrs. or anything similar will also work.
Spinner baits are great for redfish shallow around Oyster reefs or just over the sea grass. Take the skirt off and replace it with either a mullet imitation or a curl tail gulp
Poppers are less effective in the salt compared to the walkers unless there is a good bit of wave action. They'll still work but I prefer the walkers.

You will find, as Grinder alluded to, that the saltwater lures are built a little or lot tougher. The SW versions will have a stronger split ring and a tinned zinc coated hook in most cases. The black nickel coating isn't bad and it'll work for a weekend but they'll rust faster than the sink.. they all get rusty... its just a matter of how fast.

Me... if you have any zara spook or spook juniors, I'd throw that in any color and clear-ish. Add the above plastics or zoom flukes on the jigheads he mentions. and grab a spinner bait and you'll be good to go.

No, the best way I found to fish these is a slow retrieve bouncing on the bottom. These are designed to imitate a feeding shrimp. I was introduced to these last year by a buddy who caught fish while I was drowning live shrimp. He caught several flounder, specks and a red before I made him give me one. They are durable and tough and each red I caught last weekend was hooked perfectly in the corner of the mouth.

I hope that I remember this thread before I go down to Rockport next time.

I think it depends on the water and the weather.But generally speaking,popper and minnow is Ok.You can have a try.

Be sure and clean you reels good with fresh water when you get back. I found out the hard way.
