First of all, it was sad to hear of the Gibbons Creek drowning a few days ago - lifejacket would have prevented that. Second of all, I just found out that it's not cheap to get caught without one. Went to the river with a buddy last weekend, and since he was using someone else's kayak and is not a strong swimmer, I gave him my lifejacket to wear. Never crossed my mind that me not having one would be an issue since we were just paddling up to a sandbank to nightfish from...weren't planning to be in the yaks long at all and I'm a strong swimmer. Game warden came down right as we were leaving and got me. Gonna be a $270 ticket. Lesson learned.

I think your buddy needs to cover at least 1/2 that one.

Those cheapo orange life-jackets from wal-mart are good to have in the truck/car. Sometime's I even carry one in my kayak just in case something crazy happens.
But as others said your buddy should help you out. Only fair!

I think your buddy needs to cover at least 1/2 that one. I wouldn't ask him too but if he is really your buddy he will offer to pay it all. If not then you are getting more for your $270 than just a paid ticket.

If that "buddy" hasn't already stepped in and offered to pay the ticket HE should have gotten, you just learned to never take him fishing again. In your shoes, I'd let him know why, too.

I don't see how he owes him anything. If he were smart he would have brought his own. This applies to the same logic that "oh you don't have a job so take 15% of my paycheck" mentality. Just my 2 cents.

As the original poster I agree with this guy.^ I should have thought to grab another, we have two more at the house, it just never once crossed my mind. It just blew me away how pricey that ticket is...

Just my 2 cents. Sir, the OP did bring his own life jacket. But, because he loaned it to his poor swimmer friend who DID NOT bring a life jacket, the OP received a ticket. Now, if the OP had not been concerned for the safety of the stupid friend, the OP would have worn his own life jacket that he brought with him. The poor swimmer idiot who did not bring a life jacket would have gotten a ticket. That the ticket happened at all is not the OP's fault. It is the fault of the idiot. Therefore, said idiot should reimburse the OP for the ticket. Where exactly is this logic flawed? I'm making each person responsible for himself. One of the two failed to bring a PFD. That's the one who should be paying, and you seem to think the person who DID bring a PFD should pay? Why?

...hey guys, OP here again...didn't mean to get anyone riled up lol. Again I'm not mad at my buddy, I should have thought to bring another life jacket since he doesn't kayak often and therefore doesn't own his own PFD. Just wanted to remind everyone to make sure and have them so you don't get a similar ticket or worse. That is all.
