Do you guys have opinions on which brand has the strongest EWG soft plastic hooks? I know straight shank flipping hooks will be stronger, but I'm curious about EWG.

I feel like Gamakatsu, Owner and Decoy all make good EWGs. I will use any of the 3 and feel confident they will hold up.

In my experience,

Owner > gammy > trokar > mustad.

So I use owner most of the time.
I don't know about data, but I have used a lot of heavy line, braid etc., over the years and that's what have noticed. The point on owner also bends over less.

Mark I never used decoy, might be good. I still use gammy at times and they are fine.

I've been an Owner guy for many years but have recently been impressed with the VMC HDWG hooks. Very strong, super sharp and getting excellent durabilty and hook-up ratio with them.

I bought a few packs last summer out in California. They have really impressed me. Need to order some more actually. Really well made hooks.

Not to hijack the thread, but what about a straight offset hook (not a wide gap) that won't bend using braid? I've tried Flipping Hooks but I can't seem to get the bait to hang straight using them. Always a bend at the top because of the shank and then you can't texpose the bait on the hook. I just don't like the EWG hooks for plastics that are smaller or thin. I don't pitch braid very often, but we were at Tawakoni a week ago and I bent a couple offset hooks and had to go to my partners superline EWG.

GamakatsuEWG Superline Hook

Here's what you want right here. This hook has flipping grade wire but in a EWG style hook. It's the best of both worlds! I find myself using this hook with bulky plastics when flipping or pitching. It's as strong as it is sharp. Great hook!

Tough hooks for tough fish. Now if the fish just came as easy as the hooks! smile

Widely available: Gammy superline and Owner wide gap extra strong worm hooks

I also like the Daiichi D45 offset wide gap bleeding bait hooks--very strong.

Tom,

I use a 2/0 straight shank hook from Owner for flipping small or thin baits...I actually weld on a wire keeper. There is no bending that hook. The trick is to run the point through the plastic as straight as possible to keep the bait looking normal and for a positive hookset
