Any push button she likes! My daughter started on a pink Barbie push button. She caught her first bluegill within minutes. Now she is 10 years old and fishes everything from my Curado baitcasters to Lamson/TFO fly rods.

The key to fishing with kids is it's THEIR time. If you make it all about THEM then they will be hooked for life. I tried to "force" my first 2 to fish good equipment, but I didn't make it too much fun. Take it from someone who raised 3 fishermen....take your daughter to Wal-Mart (not Bass Pro) and let her choose whatever she likes. Put her on some bluegill and she will love the experience. Then, as she gets older, she will forever have the memories of the both of you having fun. Then you can REALLY enjoy time on the water with her.

People stop and stare now at my 10 year old catching on the fly and using baitcasters like a pro!

Best of luck!!!

I agree, start her out simple with something that is obviously hers. Nothing says "I'm a little girl's fishing rig" like a Barbie or Dora rod. Buy an extra for her to practice with around the house.

As they graduate/grow, the problem does become a little more complex. My girl is 8 now, and the battle I've been fighting is finding gear that fits her, yet is robust enough to land decent fish without undue wear and tear. Zebco 33's just don't last that long when in schooling Tawakoni hybrids. This year she'll graduate to her first spinning rig and we can start getting a bit more serious.

But for starting out, yeah, keep it simple. And, make sure whatever she's fishing with will float, or attach a rod float to it. The last statement, I speak from experience.

If you're not living on the edge, you're taking up too much space!

The above advice is good. I got my kid a Spiderman setup when he was three. He sore lipped many a bluegill at the tank with it. The smile on their faces when they catch a fish on their own rig will make your day. My best advice is when they get bored, go do something else so they don't get tired of it, and they will be hooked for good.

Here is a pic from several years ago:
