I have a 16' stick steer Williams Craft fiberglass boat that I want to upgrade the trolling motor on. It currently has a MK 12V power drive and I am interested in the spot lock feature. Looking at the MK Ulterra for the spot lock and auto stow and go features. I have a hummingbird 998C but don't see much integration because the club lake this boat is on is not available in the lake maps. My concern is around reviews telling me the spotlock on the ulterra is not very tight. The lit says it keeps you within 5 feet of where you engage. The reviews I've seen say it's more like 10 to 15 feet and that defeats the purpose. Any advice is much appreciated.

I don't believe that spot-lock cares about a map. You pick a spot, that spot has a unique lat/lon coordinate set per the GPS signal. The unit is simply in a virtual "GO TO WAYPOINT" mode for a temporary waypoint it has created. No map data is involved in this process.

From what people say, the Ulterra and newer Terrova are better at spotlock. I have a several year old Terrova and the spot lock absolutely sucks, it's lucky to keep a 60' front to back line from my anchor spot.

Self contained GPS so ,any functions aren't dependent on your fish finder. As far as spotlock accuracy, there are many factors that will effect your results and it also depends on what you want to accomplish with it. You have to use the correct size TM for your boat. Too small or too large of thrust will effect your results. The size of your boat and how much it gets blown around will also have it's effects. Wind and wave conditions will also have an effect. For me, the stronger the wind/current the more accurate it is. If you want to sit on top of a brush pile and fish it vertically then you might not be happy. I bass fish and just need it to hold me in an area so that I can cast and I find it more than sufficient for that.

I fish a 15' boat which gets blown around. I couldn't hold it in a position with a manual TM better than the spot lock. I also don't have to worry about the boat control while doing other things. In deeper water, the only other option is an anchor but I'm not in one area long enough to justify dropping anchor and pulling a ton of weight up all day long. I have never regretted my Terrova and on any future boat that or a Ulterra will be my first upgrade.

If in doubt, take a ride with someone who has one and test it first hand before spending the bucks. You'll see them sold used by people who didn't and di not like them.

Thanks for the input. A TM guy said I should consider the motor guide Xi5. Anyone have any experience with that one?

MotorGuide Xi5 will hold much tighter over the Minn Kota i-Pilot. It has two 2 GPS antennas as where the Minn Kota has 1 GPS antenna.

I like the MG Xi5 better than the MK. See the videos in my post below.
