What is the difference; if any, between reporting a rules violation to the TD and protesting in a bass tournament?
I would like to hear your opinion. I will give mine later.

I have reported a violation before and asked the TD to speak to the team about the violation (culling in the marina of weigh in). The DQ would not have changed any money places in the tourney. My thoughts were maybe they did not know and should be informed for future events. If I protested an action, I would expect some action taken. I feel if important enough to file protest, important enough for some action.

The same thing. Only difference is a "rule violation" report is something that doesn't necassarily Impact you and your standings. A formal protest is the same thing, except the outcome would likely benefit you in some way.
I, personally, wouldn't report a rules violation. If I saw it happen I would tell the other angler what they did. Kinda a sportsman to sportsman thing. If someone flangrantly broke the rules to benefit their standing in the tourney, I would file a protest.
To me it's more about them NOT knowing the rules and accidentally breaking them vs KNOWING the rules and intentionally breaking them. I guess.
I'm not a big cry baby go-tell-mommy kinda guy....so seldom do I tell on other people unless it's really bad.

Everyone should play by the rules. In fact I would like to see in the polygraph a question did you read the rules and follow them while in this tournament.
I can assure you most do not read nor do they understand the rules. It is like the 25 yd rule. It says no fishing with in 25 yds of another angler.
While most people think that their boat can be with in 25 yds, but the boat is not fishing the lure is. Therefore IMO it should be no lure with in 25 yds of another angler.
Most TD wont address this if asked.
We all have rules to go by and some people try bending the rules to their advantage anyway they can. IMO

Second question....Did you knowingly break any tournament rules during official practice or during the tournament days? Nope. First question was a "qualifier" to have a quick comparison. Third question was do I want my check mailed to me, or do I want to wait for it. Haha. Polygraphs keep the honest folks honest. They are not, and never will be, an accurate way to determine a persons truthfulness. It is more of a formality now days at the bigger tourneys. A scare tactic to kinda help "self police" the entrants.

I like that 25 or 50 yard rule, what does everyone carry a range finder with them ? How the hell do you prove that someone got within 25 yards of another boat ?

Take a picture with your phone if someone is with in the range and get the TX numbers. That is the best way.Anyone who bow hunts knows that distance. The average cast is about 30 yds my guess.
On the polygraph I remember the question if you follow the rules and all. I have never had one ask did you read the rules. Therefor if you did not read the rules and take the exam you would not know if you broke any or not. IMO

Lie detectors only keep an honest man from cheating.
IF you are a cheater and a good liar then you can easily pass a polygraph..........

I see a problem only polygraphing 1st place. I think there should be another random in the top 10. In a bass champs or Team trail you could make sure you didn't get 1st and come out with a pretty good pay day.

Sportsmanship 20 years ago was way better than it is today. The national tourneys I fish have a mandatory meeting of EVERY contestant the day before. The rules are reviewed. As well as any additional rules pertaining strictly to the body of water we are using. Discussing locking or not, marinas that are "service" marinas....etc. There is no excuses at these. Also....there is no distance rule. 99% are respectful. The 1% that isn't get handled "some other way"....lol. Don't know what that is personally. Haha

I agree with that also. You already have the guy there anyhow. Pay a little extra for another exam random top 10. Great Idea.

A lie detector can also take a honest man and make him look like a dishonest man and mess his life all up. Lie detectors only keep an honest man from cheating.
