Coming from a long time boat owner, I'd say just make sure to keep you wallet close by. If you aren't repairing it you'll be updating it. Whatever is the amount of days you think you'll be on the water, divide that number by 10 and it will be more accurate. Always, always, always make sure you don't let fuel sit in the motor. If you aren't using it drain all of the fuel from the motor. Enjoy the joys of B-O-A-T ( Bust Out Another Thousand) ownership.

1. seafoam in the gas, preservative and cleaner and I along with others use it in all engines I own. wal mart 7.00 a can
2. learn to back the trailer somewhere besides the boat ramp, parking lot with spaces laid out is a good plan, get so that you can put the trailer in a parking spot with no pull ups. try it from all starting angles too, not all ramps are the same.
3. be dbl sure you have all required items from tpwd rules.
4. get in the habit of putting any plugs in when you pretrip the boat trailer, always do a walkaround and check lights, tires etc. and this is a good time to teach yourself to install the plug.
5. when at the ramp, like said, if solo let prs. launch first, till you get good at launch and load don't be "THAT GUY" at the ramp. others will tick you off with the stupidity and loading the boat just before it gets to the water etc, use common sense and be aware of the morons.
6. learn the rules of the road on the water, who has right of way etc, this is important, the boating classes online are worth it and insurance will cut ya a discount if you have it.
7. never be afraid to ask, the worst question is the one not asked, yeah you may get some smart arse replies (just don't ask the skiers and pwc aholes) but most fishermen will be glad to help.
8. break out another thousand, chit breaks, chit breaks a lot when you are learning.
