So, i got the urge to go fishing last weekend after not going in a long time, probably 7 yrs or so. Broke out my spinner box and lo and behold, the skirts are all shot and paint flaked off of the heads from oxidation. "No worries! Ill buy more!" I tell myself. Hop online to basspro and cabelas and holy [censored] the cost for spinnerbaits has skyrocketed! I paid about $2 for my strike kings when i got them long time ago, and now theyre pushing $7-$8 each!

Sure i could just replace the skirts, but that doesnt fix the oxidation, and im no artist. So, got some alternatives?

I love Bass Pro and Cabelas, but only buy when stuff goes on clearance.

For everyday good prices nobody beats Academy for selection and price. It gets even better when stuff goes on sale. Their house brand "H2O Express" is VERY good and way cheaper than the competition.

Get you some h&h spinner baits at your local academy or tackle shop! Less than 2$! Come in different colors and blade schemes! Good luck.. You will get bit.

There's always the fish catching Blue Fox whip tails, 5 for 6 bucks at Wally World, not to mention old reliable, the rooster tail, about 2.69/2.79 apiece. H & H spinners, the lure i cut my fish catching teeth on, less than 2 bucks apiece, sturdy and durable. Fish catching fools, they are! how about a Beetle Spin, again, less than 3 bucks, and also wild about catching fish of virtually all species. You can definitely fill a freezer on a budget! Or CPR to your heart's content! I been doing it seems like forever!

Agreed completely. Cabela's and Bass Pro seem to consistently by $2-3 more than Academy. For example, just this past week I needed some Seaguar Invizx. The spool was $21 at Cabela's, $18 at Academy. As far as the H2O lures go at Academy, the crankbaits are awesome (especially the wakebait, which is killer on ponds that have a lot of vegetation), and their plastic worm hooks are solid. Definitely give their house brand stuff a try before running out and buying a bunch of more expensive tackle.

Little lead head grubs and jigs are an inexpensive and effective alternative. Long term, try Wlure.com for cheap crank baits that seem to have pretty good quality with email offerings at clearance prices. I buy by the dozen and give good producers to other fishermen, beginners, and especially military who just want to catch something.

considering the cost of lures......as long as the spinners, hooks, and heads are ok......do yourself a favor and just buy new skirts and a little model paint to re-do the heads and you will be all set.

i use the h2o sunfish swim bait and the 1.99- 2.50 spinner baits (academy house brand). I have landed lots of bass on these and they are legit. no need to spend 8 bucks on a spinner bait. i also get the 2.99 on sale chatter baits.

The oxidation isn't gonna bother those fish One bit. Barlows has skirts probably not too expensive.

eeks - imagine my sticker shock after a +40 year hiatus!

Fishing, a man knows a serenity of soul and peace of mind that he finds in doing nothing else, and it makes no difference whether or not he catches anything. The mind of a true fisherman is not on petty subjects.
