I had a pretty visitor in the water meter box. It really hated being moved and struck at me. Can anyone tell me what it is? I moved it out of my way without harming it. It doesn't look like any of the poisonous varieties I know about.

King Snake. Good snake to have around, they eat other snakes, and a mouse or 2.

Speckled King Snake
Definitely not venomous but eats "bad" snakes. Awesome snakes to have around the house.

Keep him around. Speckled king snake, you won't have any poisonous snakes around with him around!

I once noticed a commotion in the weeds and leaf littler of some debris behind my garage. When I checked what it was, I was witness to a fair sized king snake aggressively pursuing (and eliminating) what I believe to have been a smaller copperhead. It was a treat to get to watch an event we so rarely get to witness.

Pretty rare for a king snake to strike. Usually you can just pick them up to move them and they don't mind. One dnake that is good to have around.

Good for you moving a harmless snake to be on his way to do good things! Many of the pinheads on the board would have killed it while screaming like a little pre-teen girl. Although it may have struck at you, this is only because the snake was startled. Once picked up, they calm down very fast and are completely harmless.
King Snakes defiantly do damage to other harmful/varmint critters. When they no longer find prey (eliminate the mice & rats in most cases) they move on.
+1 for you Smithhaven
