I recently returned from Fork and while my boat was parked in the driveway the last few nights I have noticed that my indicator light is on and prop slowly turning. I originally thought it may have been the momentary switch because when I would push it down the light would turn off but would kick back on after a few minutes. I called my trolling motor repair shop and they assumed that it was water in the lower unit malfunctioning a circuit. Has anyone ever had the same experience or could provide some tips of how to fix this without bringing it in. I have a tournament next Saturday and they are around a week behind so it would be close.

hmm, being a digital trolling motor really opens up the possibilities... I would take off the switches and clean them just to help rule out any physical issues. since it is digital there must be some kind of chip which makes it more difficult to be sure.

That almost sounds like the wiring got reversed. I would make sure that the selector switch is not in between settings. Make sure it is either "off" (ideally) or "momentary". If it has partly opened the constant circuit, you could have some voltage slip through. Also, check the speed dial.

I have a MG Tour 82# and have not had this problem. I always unplug it before trailing home from the lake and leave it unplugged until the day before going out, when I plug it in and test it. Then I unplug again until I get to the lake the next day, when I prep the boat for launch. Did you call Boris Marine in Azle, 817-624-3932, with your question? Donnie might be able to help.

Its a three way switch, (constant, momentary, and max).

I have never had this problem either. That is why its so confusing to me now. I am located in OK so wouldn't be able to get it to TX and back in time. I was just looking for any remedies I may be able to do. I appreciate all the help so far though. Thank you

I've had it happen twice 1st time was the foot switch had water in it.I'd check your switches.does it stop when you turn the speed dial

No, If I push the momentary button it will stop for a second then kick back on. If I adjust the dial it works the way it should on the speed. When it kicks back on though it will slowly start gaining speed.

I once had a rock fall out of the sole of my shoe and wedge just right to power my foot control switch.

There should be a rubber boot on the switch it wears out and let's water in. maybe take the switch off and see if it has constant contact on and off

Ok, When I get home I'll pull the prop tilt the lower unit to check for water. Then I will check out the switch b/c I did not notice the rubber boot was wearing out. Is there anything else while I have it pulled apart besides maybe the battery connections?

I had the same issue with that MG Tour 82 digital. It just started running on its own.
I had to take it to Boris Marine in Lake Worth, 817-624-3932.
Don was able to fix it. Lucky for me at the time mine was under warranty .

I have seen this happen several times.. And to me as well.. If you speared a wave or got the pedal soaking wet it can happen.. But it is likely that the seal at the motor has been breached and there is water/moisture in the motor housing..

You can remove the prop, loosen the two screws that hold the motor together.. Not too far.. Just an eighth of an inch or so.. Separate the cap (cone) from the center housing a bit and see if any water comes out.. Be careful not to pull the housing on the prop end off or you will be dealing with getting the brushes back in place.. Of course if there is water in there you have found the problem..

Usually this is a sign that the "card" in motor itself is crapping out.. And the motor will usually work on high only.. right before it quits working at all..

What did they end up doing to yours bassnjak? I also didn't notice any water when I pulled the prop. That's not saying it didn't have it in there at one time.
