Hi,
I have a MINN-KOTA 55 Edge trolling motor, and I was told that I have to use a very specific (Minn-Kota MK110P), very expensive, battery charger to charge the battery. My charger when kaput, and my trolling motor battery is dead.
My question is, do I HAVE to have this specific charger to charge this battery, or did the salesman pull one over on me? I don't know why it should matter on a standard battery? I don't want to spend the $ on another crappy charger that will just go kaput in another year....
Thanks!

The brand of charger shouldn't make any difference on how your trolling motor performs.

The charger charges the battery, not the trolling motor. Duh! Therefore, you've been "taken" with respect to the ludicrous idea that any trolling motor has requirements for a particular charger.
I hope that you have a dedicated battery for the trolling motor power? That battery should be a deep cycle marine battery. In your case, it should probably be a Group 27 battery (not the smaller Group 24). I'll let others suggest some good chargers, but there are certainly many from which to choose. A 10A charger will probably be sufficient for you.
No matter which charger you use, the trolling motor owners manual probably says you need to disconnect the trolling motor from the battery when charging the battery. The trolling motor often has a plug you can unplug, or a breaker you can switch off. I'm not sure what your particular rig has.

Oh [censored]!
I know this is Brocephus' girl trying to investigate the desire to buy a good battery charger! Isn't it?
(Her thoughts)...."hmmm....so he said he HAS TO HAVE this specific battery charger , eh? I'll get on his TFF account and ask some folks if it really matters, or is he just telling me this"
Haha
Just kidding.....but dude, it does work. I tell my wife I have to use Steez reels on Steez rods all the time. Or I might have the reel come loose and fall in the water. Lol
Works.... Try it.
