 Alligator Gar on the Trinity River Around Athens

I moved to the Athens area last year. This puts me about 15 miles from the Trinity River. Thinking about trying to get into some Alligator Gar in the river but have never tried for them. Anybody got any experience with them in that area? Not looking for anyone's honey hole, just some general info to see if it is worth my time or if I should stick with cats on Cedar Creek and bass at Purtis Creek.

Thats my backyard. You can bank fish at 31 or launch a boat at 287. Ramps probably nasty at 287.
