I know it fishes hard at times....well most of the time for me anyway. The lake is deep, clear with rock cliffs. You can be 5 feet from shore and in 20 feet of water.
This past weekend I spent some time fishing what I thought would be a spawning flat, it wasn't any deeper than 7 feet....basically protected water....decent cover along the shoreline and nothing. I tried top water (walking the dog), chatterbait and a square bill. Had I caught anything or had a hit, I would have slowed down but nothing. Water temp is 62-63 degrees and I didn't see any spawners at all.

Saturday evening I did catch one that was about 2 pounds on topwater and two very small bass. I know there are absolute giants in this lake but I can't figure it out.
I don't know what to do different.

Try drop shot, if that doesn't work try and finding points to target the fish feeding working on their way to the beds.

This sounds a lot like a lake I fish, Lake Leon.

It's Arbuckle in Oklahoma. I'm going to living about a mile from the lake at some point and I'd really like to figure those fish out. They have to be somewhere for cryin out loud. And this time of the year that should be shallow.

My experience on lakes like that has been that I find them more often right on the bank on the 45 degree banks than I do on what I would consider a more traditional "spawning flat"

Look for gently sloping banks with stumps or bigger rocks mixed with gravel, leading back into pockets

In my opinion deep clear lakes like that are all about the spot. I know it's the spawn right now, but they might be much deeper than you'd expect on a lake like that. I'd look for rock piles out on the end of multi-directional drop offs. Spend a day finding a dozen or so good spots, then each time out check them with your fish finder looking for fish. Let your electronics do the work for you. Very often these lakes have to be fished methodically. That's tough to do if you are not confident the fish are there. 2cents

Just curious, are you just blind casting and covering water or are you graphing fish and they just aren't biting?

You should try some of the lakes here in East Tennessee....I've been 5 foot from the shore and in 98 feet of water....this ex-Texan is having a tough time figuring this place out......

This time of year...spawning season...if your lake has any marinas I'd be going behind them and fish a weightless Senko, light t-rig with a brush hog, speed craw or white lizard, finesse jig, and I'd have a top water prop bait handy.

I did mark a tree off-shore which looked like it was sitting on a ledge of the channel.....but i'm not marking fish. Last weekend I was just beating the bank blind casting....trying to locate fish.

I'm still not 100% confident I know what fish are on my 1198c humminbird. I've watched every you tube video humanly possible. I try to pay close attention to it every time on the water. I guess once I mark what I think are fish and actually catch them, then i'll know what i'm looking for.

I thought they'd be in the back of creeks cruising the banks. Had I caught some fish or even seen them, I would have slowed down with the soft plastic stuff.

Fish the bluffs Super fluke, weighted hook.
Cast parallel to bluff, don't work it let it fall to bottom.
Reel in fast same same.Works great in tree tops too.

The problem I have is trying to avoid blind casting to areas that simply don't hold fish. If I go over an area I should see something that resembles a fish on my electronics, you'd think anyway. Back off and make some casts.

Rudy, you are saying don't twitch the rod....just cast, let it sink to the bottom and reel in fast?

Good lure and technique choices above. Agree with downsizing the line with clear water. You say it's mostly rock bluffs, if you find anything different like trees or grass or where muddier water meets the clear water, those are good spots. That big bend in one of the northern feeder creeks looks really good on google earth.

Here's another good area with multiple points, multidirectional drop offs and funnel points. The google earth pic is from early February 2015, before all the rain. That island and peninsula will now be submerged.

I have found in the clear lakes that I have fished it can be difficult to get them on so called hard baits. You
may want to slow down and cover less water but have a more realistic presentation-say a worm, tube, senko, fluke etc.

They are in full spawn right now. Big girls have been hard to come by unless you are looking at them. Go on a sunny/low wind day and you will see fish everywhere. Like I said, need to be sight fishing that place right now. Should be an aggressive post-spawn bite here in a week or two.
