Hello everyone, i recently moved to Houston last fall and now that the weather is warming up and i have a bit more free time im looking at spending more time in Galveston fishing on-shore and sand banks. I want to get all new gear and set ups for fishing saltwater and want to know everyone's recommendations on reels, rods, (or combos) line, bait , etc. Id like to have a strong step up that is at least good enough to pull in a black tip if hooked. Also what are some of the best spots and times to go? ive heard rollover pass and of course the piers but still would like to hear all the options. Any and all advice is greatly appreciated!

I use an Abu Garcia Ambassador 5000 as they cast well against tough winds and seem to hold up very well against corrosion and other problems associated with saltwater fishing but a good spinning reel is fine. 30lb+ braid with a 20-30lb floroucarbon leader is absolutely essential. Live bait will do well in any area but you'll have to do some searching for your own spots . My top artificial choice would be the Mirrolure mirrodine 17MR in hot pink/chartreuse. Works well for trout and reds but trout annihilate it in particular but youll need clear water for it to be most effective. Walk the dog topwaters will also be effective at times. Of course always look for oyster reefs or grassy areas in the bay. In late June/early July the green water will come up all the way to shore and when it does, its some of the best fishing youll ever experience.
