has anyone figured out a more convenient and comfortable way to handle the remote for controlling the remote for the minn kota trolling motor? It seems awkward at best to have it hanging around the neck, getting twisted, etc.

Do you have the original or the link? I have the original small remote and I attached it to a clip that I hang from my belt loop. I tried my belt once and almost lost it when I went to "relieve" my bladder.

I have the link and it is significantly larger. I just find it awkward to handle with a rod in one hand and trying to steer with the other. I guess I haven't used it enough to know where all the buttons are so I am always doing the wrong thing and having to adjust.

I had the small one and it took some time. Now I have the large one and hated it for the size, weight and controls. Keeps bumping my rod making me think that I have a hit. I have been using it for a month or two and it is starting to feel as comfortable as the small one. Give yourself time to adjust. I do use my foot pedal more now for minor corrections.

I don't have a foot pedal, but it may be a worthwhile investment. To use the remote you have to look at it, or at least I do, and with foot pedal you could still be fishing and watching the rod.

They have a micro remote which works well. Doesn't have a screen on it but if you keep the big remote near by you can see the screen and use the micro remote. It is about $100. Works with the I pilot link

Before you buy one try to find someone and try it out. It works nothing like a traditional foot control. I hate it. I only use it if I'm busy and need to just make a bump to turn the head a little. I could never use it to steer the boat all day. You really don't have any feel on how much it is turning the unit so you'll still have to watch the trolling motor to see if you turned it the right amount. Under the pedal is just a temporary on /off button so you don't have a feel for it. It's all about time depressing the button unlike the feedback from a normal control. IMO the small remote that has been mentioned is the better option. Fewer buttons so easier to remember where they are. It's like anything else, the more you use the less you'll think about it and it will become second nature.

I built this to solve that exact problem. I installed a pedestal base on the bow deck, the bracket holds my HB 999 along with a cup holder to hold a drink. I added a bracket to mount the snap in holder for the TM remote. The angle bracket at the bottom secures to the deck to prevent rotation. Works pretty good.

I used this for my Terrova remote, now use it for my XI5 remote. They work great, are plenty strong and keep the remote handy but out of the way

Like you,I couldn't stand having my remote around my neck. It just got in the way. My grandson made a couple lanyards for our remotes and we just clip them onto our belt loops. It's way more comfortable than having them dangle from your neck.

Thanks, glad to hear that I am not the only one who hates it around the neck. Looks like you have a innovative grandson who likes to fish. A grandson or granddaughter for a fishing mate is as good as it gets.

I always just had mine around my neck. after a little time, you remember where all the buttons are, and you don't even have to look at it. it was easier that way for me. I guess you just have to try it and see what works best for you.
